When it comes to train simulators, nothing else does it quite like Railroads Online, the huge open-world multiplayer sandbox where you can build railroads and control beautifully detailed locomotives. After spending over three years in early access improving everything from the UI to adding all-new content, Railroads Online has finally rolled into the station right now.
That’s right, developer Stefan Kelnberger has dropped Railroads Online with a train-load of new content (most notably the new Mesa Plains map), meaning you can board one of the best train games without delay. Plus, this full launch is accompanied by the release of two exciting DLCs.
Unlike most train simulation games, Railroads Online is actually a multiplayer game in which up to 16 players can team up to design and construct tracks and stations around the map. Of course, you can also operate these networks as a team, too, involving switching tracks and keeping these gorgeous, authentic golden age steam trains rolling. Don’t worry though, you can also enjoy Railroads Online by yourself, though it certainly takes longer to get in the driver’s seat of your favorite trains.
You’ll be spending most of your time at the start of the game creating your dream rail network track by track, with city-builder-inspired creation tools for both rails and stations. It’s important that you build your railway well, too, as Railroads Online takes advantage of Unreal Engine 5’s advanced physics systems to authentically simulate train handling, collisions, and more for maximum immersion on the rails.
As for the launch DLC packs, these are Pioneer and Explorer. Pioneer contains the Bell’s Gap 0-6-0 locomotive, the placeable building ‘Red Mountain’ depot, and a special skin for the beloved Montezuma locomotive. This is free for early-access players or can be purchased separately. The second pack is Explorer, which includes a new caboose and a new locomotive, the powerful FE&MV 4-8-0 Mastodon, as well as the ability to place plants and animal species.
Railroads Online is available right now on Steam for $34.99, with a more expensive Extended Edition including both DLCs costing $39.99. Otherwise, the Pioneer DLC pack can be bought separately for $2.99 and the Explorer DLC for $4.99. You can find the Steam store page here.
If you just can’t get enough of management games, then why not check out the best city-building games once you’ve built the railroad empire of your dreams? Thankfully, you’re spoilt for choice, especially outside of the train niche.
