Dragon Age: The Veilguard is one of those wonderfully dense games where you’re bound to keep discovering new secrets every time you play. This can be anything from small character tidbits to whatever those weird standing nug statues are supposed to be.
Aside from the bountiful Easter eggs and hidden details, The Veilguard also features plenty of easily missed side stories that flesh out characters and locations. You have to work to find some of them, but they’re absolutely worth the effort.
8 The True Echo In The Well
How To Find |
By the blighted tree in the Heights of Athim area of the Crossroads |
---|---|
What You Get |
A nice accessory and peace of mind |
One quest in the already oppressively dreary Hossberg Wetlands is the rather depressing Only an Echo, which sees you investigating a family’s mysterious disappearance. The quest itself is straightforward enough, leading you to a haunted well that you ultimately destroy.
But did you know that’s not the end of this story? If you travel to the blighted tree in the Crossroads, you’ll find another well that just so happens to be open. It’s not marked at all as part of the quest. But drop down, and you’ll find the actual demon behind the disappearances. One fight later, and the family is finally avenged.
7 The Detective And The Assassin
How To Find |
Develop Neve and Lucanis’ bonds and talk to them at the Lighthouse often |
---|---|
What You Get |
Your friends’ happiness |
On one of the rare light-hearted notes in The Veilguard, several of your party members can match up with others romantically if you don’t pursue them as a love interest. One such pairing is Neve and Lucanis, but it can be easy to miss if you don’t go back to the Lighthouse that much.
Lucanis shows his affection, as so many do, by making Neve’s favorite dessert. This is an oddly adorable development from the suave assassin, and you can encourage them both to get together once things develop enough.
6 Flowers Return To The Wetlands
How To Find |
Do side quests at Hossberg Wetlands until the flowers begin to bloom, then deliver three of them to the spirit where you fought the dragons during ‘Fire and Ice’ |
---|---|
What You Get |
An achievement and one fewer miniboss |
You may have already found the quest that results in the brilliant blue flower known as Brona’s Bloom returning to life in the Hossberg Wetlands. But the heartwarming scene of Grey Warden couple goals Antoine and Evka enjoying the new field of color isn’t the end of this tale.
After you pick the flower from this location, there are two others you can find in the region. Find them all, and you can bring them to where you fought the two dragons during the ‘Fire and Ice’ main quest and place them before the spirit there. This calms a difficult respawning demon boss that dwelled there before you brought the flowers, and it even gives you The Veilguard’s rarest achievement.
5 Davrin Has History With Kal-Sharok
How To Find |
Bring Davrin with you on Harding’s The Waiting Stone quest |
---|---|
What You Get |
Some nice Davrin lore |
Some hidden plotlines are little more than flavor text for certain characters, but that doesn’t make them any less intriguing. When you play Harding’s mission that brings her to the reclusive dwarven city of Kal-Sharok, make sure to take Davrin with you. Your guide, Stalgard, will regard Davrin with a touch of familiarity, saying some words in dwarven.
Davrin will respond in kind, revealing he’s not only multilingual, but has quite possibly had dealings with Kal-Sharok or at least Stalgard himself in the past. This is apparently never addressed at any other point in the game, so it’s fascinating to learn this little detail about our favorite Grey Warden griffon dad.
4 A Romance Of Fire And Stone
How To Find |
Develop Taash and Harding’s bonds and encourage them when prompted |
---|---|
What You Get |
A cute Taash and Harding moment. |
This was revealed by the developers well before The Veilguard released, but many can still miss it if they don’t keep up with their companions at the Lighthouse. Later on, after you’ve progressed Taash and Harding’s bond levels (and if you haven’t romanced either of them), they’ll both express pretty clear interest in each other.
Like other non-player romances, you can still influence how things go here, and these two are adorable together so you know the right choice. What makes the romance between Taash and Harding so good, aside from Taash’s adorably unfortunate fixation on Harding’s scent, is how they develop a friendship first. So you know there’s something real there.
3 Bellara Loves Her Crime Serials
How To Find |
Keep up with Bellara at the Lighthouse and bring her with Neve on missions |
---|---|
What You Get |
A moment with Bellara. |
During an early mission with Neve, you’ll stop by a newsstand to pick up some locally-written stories for Bellara. It’s a lovely bit of extra character flavor for her, and it actually goes beyond that.
Throughout the game, from conversations at the Lighthouse and in the field, you can learn more about Bellara’s love for these crime serials. She loves the drama but maintains an optimistic hope for the inevitably tragic stories, and even becomes inspired to write her own.
2 Emmrich’s Veil Jumper Meet-Cute
How To Find |
Develop Emmrich’s bond and keep talking to him at the Lighthouse |
---|---|
What You Get |
Emmrich finding love. |
Not every companion finds romance among their comrades if a wild Rook doesn’t come calling. Some are content on their own, but in the case of Emmrich, love can be just an Eluvian away. Luckily, this isn’t in the same way Morrigan was “just an Eluvian away” to the Hero of Ferelden.
As you get to know Emmrich, and assuming you’re not romancing him, you’ll eventually find him preparing for a nice night out with a special someone. That someone is the stoic but warm Strife of the Veil Jumpers. This hopefully ironically-named elf is just as happy with Emmrich’s company, and the two pleasant older gentlemen seem like a truly cozy couple.
1 The Secret Ending
How To Find |
Defeat specific powerful enemies in Arlathan, Necropolis Halls, and the Crossroads |
---|---|
What You Get |
The true ending |
At this point, what would a Dragon Age game be without a tease at the end? In the case of The Veilguard, you may very well not have even seen it. But it’s there, and it has wild implications for the future of the series. Fight three particularly hardy enemies throughout the game in Arlathan, Necropolis Halls, and the Crossroads, and you can pick up a mysterious circular artifact after defeating each one.
You’ll hear an unnerving disembodied voice, but more importantly, getting all of them unlocks the game’s end credits scene which teases the shadowy Executors, an unknown group of beings who have seemingly been behind everything that’s happened in the Dragon Age series. Whether or not that’s a worthy plot point is debatable, but what would gaming be without something to complain about?
