Silent Hill 2 Remake Fan Spots Mary In Hospital Photograph

Silent Hill 2 Remake Fan Spots Mary In Hospital Photograph

Key Takeaways

  • Silent Hill 2 Remake fans have noticed that Mary can appear in the Brookhaven Hospital staff photograph.
  • It’s unclear what triggers this (whether it’s tied to an ending or a New Game Plus easter egg), but it appears to be James Sunderland projecting her into the image all the same.

One eagle-eyed Silent Hill 2 fan, Reddit user Rashmunchel, has found an interesting detail in the remake after digging through the files — Mary can appear in the Brookhaven Hospital staff photograph. Although, it’s unclear why.

There are two versions of this photograph which you can find on the wall in the hospital itself, one with Mary and one without.

One commenter noted that she didn’t appear in the photo during their original playthrough (another attached the photo without Mary to prove as much), speculating that it’s a New Game Plus exclusive easter egg.

As fans point out, this is almost certainly a nod to The Shining in which Jack Torrence is added to the Overlook Hotel photograph.

But after digging around to find proof to verify this discovery, I came across a player (Reddit user markleung) who, when trying to solve the padlock puzzle, mistook the staff photo for the nurses one.

As they’re unsure of how to properly solve the puzzle, I’m assuming they’re not in New Game Plus. But if you look closely at the screenshot they attached, you’ll see Mary in the background all the same.

It’s Not The Only Strange Mary Sighting

It appears as though James Sunderland is projecting Mary into the image, since she’s far more opaque than the staff; Reddit user Gengarin666 also points out that you can also find a medical record for “M.S.S.”, possibly referring to Mary Shepherd-Sunderland; and you can hear Mary yelling James’ name on the third floor of the hotel.

Why she appears for some in this photograph, and not others, is unclear. Perhaps it’s tied to one of the endings, depending on how you’ve played the game up until that point. Whatever the reasoning, it isn’t the only Mary sighting fans have discovered. In the Blue Creek Apartments, there’s another easy-to-miss easter egg.

From the balcony, if you look towards the window, you can see what appears to be Mary’s silhouette watching from afar. It’s unnerving, to say the least. And if you head back to that room, she’ll have disappeared.

Clearly, there’s a lot more for us to uncover in Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2, and a lot more mysteries to solve. But it wouldn’t be a Silent Hill game without it kicking the internet into a speculation frenzy, eh?
