AI is a divisive subject. While there are those who see the benefit of integrating everything with AI, there are those who think things will go full Skynet. AI tools have made their way into video games, being used for things like dialogue and art. While it’s evolving everyday, AI created content still can’t match the human touch.

Elon Musk Wants To Start An AI Game Studio? Don’t Worry About It
Does anyone really think this dork is going to “make games great again”?
The truth is that AI is a broad term. Developers have been using AI in video games for years, but it’s only recently that it has started replacing artistic expression in fringe cases. However PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst thinks there needs to be a balance to truly leverage AI and take the games industry forward.
Perfectly Balanced, As All Things Should Be
When asked by BBC about the future of AI in gaming, Hulst said that he believes that AI will not fully replace humans as developers, and that they will need to work together in order to take the next step for the industry (thanks, Eurogamer).

Using AI voice overs, even temporary ones, is disrespectful to actors and players.
“I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content,” he said. “Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.”
While AI can churn out content at a whim and at a fraction of the cost, ensuring that that content feels genuine can only be done by a human being. Hulst feels that striking a balance between the two would empower the gaming industry like never before. Of course, nobody likes AI slop artwork and voice acting, so it’s hard to imagine how this balance could be struck, especially when jobs are on the line.
Elsewhere in the interview Hulst and co-CEO Hideaki Nishino spoke about the learnings from the fall of Concord and taking the PlayStation brand beyond the gaming category and into the overall entertainment category.
Speaking of AI in games, Elon Musk, recently announced that his artificial intelligence firm xAI will start an AI-based video game studio because “Too many game studios that are owned by massive corporations.”
