With House of the Dragon over for another season, Game of Thrones fans are looking out for the next spin-off from George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the next series in the race and HBO recently narrowed down its release date.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on Martin’s novella Tales of Dunk and Egg. It’s both a prequel to Game of Thrones and a sequel to House of the Dragon, with the series taking place in between the two. Martin serves on the project as creator and executive producer along with Ira Parker and Ryan Condal. The story stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, who is a hedge knight (aka a knight with no master), and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, aka Prince Aegon Targaryen, who serves as Duncan’s squire.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Release Window Revealed
During a tech and media conference, attended by Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette provided an update on the release dates for many of its streaming series in 2025, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. According to Perrette, the next Game of Thrones series is aiming for a “late 2025 launch,” which Variety added is likely to be in the fourth quarter of the year (i.e. between October and December). The streamer recently provided some clarity on the release dates of anticipated series like The Last of Us Season 2 and The White Lotus. Here are the release windows that have been announced for HBO’s 2025 series:
- The White Lotus Season 3: February 2025
- The Last of Us Season 2: Spring 2025
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Late 2025
Filming on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms began in June 2024 in Ireland and lasted four months until September. The series is expected to be smaller than the other Game of Thrones productions, with just six episodes in its season. Along with Prince Aegon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will also feature other Targaryen family members, including Aegon’s brothers Prince Aerion and Prince Daeron, his father Maekar Targaryen, and Prince Baelor, the heir and Hand of the King.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is just one of many planned spin-offs in the Game of Thrones world that HBO has been developing. Some of these shows never made it to air, such as Naomi Watts’ prequel Bloodmoon, which filmed its pilot before being shelved. Further investments into the Targaryen dynasty are currently underway with a series focusing on King Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. House of the Dragon will also continue for another season with filming expected to begin in 2025. Martin seems to have no shortage of Game of Thrones spin-off ideas with the author recently revealing an Arya Stark-focused show was once in early development before HBO ultimately canned the project.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be released on HBO in 2025.
