Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Explains The Intent Behind Cloud And Tifa's Kiss

Key Takeaways

  • One of the most important moments in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the Gold Saucer date scene.
  • If Cloud and Tifa go together, the moment ends with the pair kissing, something that doesn’t happen with anyone else.
  • Director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that this was done to show Cloud’s growth since he hugged Tifa in Remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that Tifa and Cloud’s optional kiss scene was done to show Cloud’s growth after the two hugged towards the end of Remake.

As you’d expect for one of 2024’s Game of the Year nominees, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is absolutely packed with moments that fans have been talking (and arguing) about for most of the year. Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest points of contention comes from the optional date scenes, which let Cloud spend some special time with a member of the party.

Whoever decided to let this damn cat throw boxes needs to be thrown into the lifestream.

How you play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will decide who that party member is and they all have some very unique scenes that range from heart-warming to romantic. Unarguably (sorry Cloud and Aerith shippers) the most romantic scene comes when Cloud and Tifa go on a date, which ends in the two of them sharing a kiss while fireworks pop off in the background.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Talks Cloud And Tifa’s Kiss

Cloud and Tifa have arguably always been Final Fantasy 7’s main romance, but considering the fact that Remake and Rebirth hint at Aerith also being in love with Cloud, it’s a surprisingly final moment that cements Cloud and Tifa as the main choice for the story. I know I’ll get hate for saying that like I did when the scene first released, but it’s the Zack-loving truth.

Now, nearly a whole year later, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has finally commented on the scene and explained the intent behind it. As highlighted by Twitter user aitaikimochi and originally reported by 4gamer.net, Hamaguchi recently accepted an award at PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 in Japan and was asked a few questions about Rebirth.

Hamaguchi was specifically asked about Cloud and Tifa’s kiss scene and what the intent was behind it, which led him to reveal that it was done to show how much Cloud had grown since Remake. In that game, Cloud and Tifa share a hug towards the end of the game, so their kiss in Rebirth was done to show how their relationship had grown.

There is a clear intention behind this scene. In the previous game, there is a scene where Cloud hugs Tifa in the final branching event scene towards the Shinra Building, but I wanted Cloud to grow in this game. So, if he hugged Tifa in the previous game, we talked about whether we should ask for more in this game. – Naoki Hamaguchi

Considering what is hinted at happening between Cloud and Tifa towards the very end of the original Final Fantasy 7, it does seem that their relationship will continue to grow in Remake’s third and final entry. We’ll have to wait to see the specifics of that scene and how far Square Enix takes it, though.
