The end-of-year movie season is ramping up and December will bring The Lord of the Rings back to the big screen for the first time since Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy wrapped up a decade ago. In anticipation of this major milestone, Warner Bros. Pictures has released an eight-minute sequence from The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim for viewers to dig into.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim takes place long before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies. The anime fantasy film tells the story of the legendary king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox), and is directed by Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Star Wars: Visions’ Kenji Kamiyama. The film is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices from The Lord of the Rings and focuses on the King’s efforts to defend his kingdom from an army of Dunlendings. Alongside Cox, the voice cast includes Gaia Wise as Hera, Helm’s daughter, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, the leader of the Dunlendings, and Yazdan Qafouri and Benjamin Wainwright as Helm’s sons Hama and Haleth. The Lord of the Ringsoriginal cast member Miranda Otto (Eowyn) serves as the film’s narrator.

The War of the Rohirrim Extended Scene Released
Ahead of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s cinema release, New Line Pictures has released eight minutes of footage from the animated film (via IGN on YouTube). The footage was previously screened to audiences at New York Comic-Con in October.
The footage opens amid a blizzard, where terrified men return to their camp and warn their leader of a terrifying experience, one they claim is linked to Helm Hammerhand. Otto’s narration then reveals the superstition that gripped the kingdom, with rumors claiming that Helm was no longer a mortal man and had instead become a wraith. These mysteries plague Helm’s kingdom as well, as the inhabitants question the disappearance of their king from within a locked room. Helm’s daughter Hera finds herself lost in hidden tunnels within the kingdom and escapes into the snow where she is captured by a pair of orcs. As the orcs prepare to feed her to their beast, Helm appears to save his daughter and they return to the kingdom. Once there, however, Helm refuses to enter the castle with Hera, pronouncing she must lead their people now.
The War of the Rohirrim footage is certainly enough to set up an aura of mystery and intrigue in the plot of the film and is paired with some striking visual depictions of The Lord of the Rings world in anime style. As the first theatrical release of a The Lord of the Rings film since 2014, expectations are high for the film and many are interested to see whether it can garner the box office success of its predecessors. Interestingly, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to open in theaters opposite Sony’s Kraven the Hunter which also opted to release eight minutes of footage earlier this week to entice fans to buy tickets.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be released on December 13.
