Now that Windblown, the new roguelike from original Dead Cells developer Motion Twin, has been out for some time, the first feature patch of the game’s Steam Early Access period is almost here. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Motion Twin’s isometric co-op spin on what it does best, but there’s been one looming problem. The current Sudden Death mechanic, which activates when a co-op ally dies, is far too brutal. With Windblown’s first big patch of new features, though, that’s going to change.
Since launch Motion Twin has implemented mouse aiming, bug fixes, and balancing, but the biggest upcoming improvement is by far the Windblown Sudden Death changes. At the moment, when you play Windblown in co-op and an ally dies, you need to kill ten enemies without getting hit once – otherwise, you die in one shot in the roguelike game. If you do succeed in your ducking and dodging endeavors, though, your partner is brought back to life.
“We’ll be releasing Windblown’s first feature patch this month, which we’re calling the Revenge Update,” Motion Twin writes.
“It’ll include new weapons, skins, trinkets, and huge updates of some major enemies and level design reworks, along with the long-awaited Sudden Death rework – replaced by The Revenge Mode! Stay tuned for updates on this patch soon.”
While Windblown is shaping up to be one of my new favorite roguelike games, Motion Twin still has a lot to do. That’s to be expected with an early access launch, however, so I’m not exactly worried about the future of the game.
That said, players have found the current Sudden Death mechanic far too intense and unforgiving, especially when facing off against a boss, which as you already know, is one enemy instead of ten. This is why Motion Twin is reworking the system while keeping the mechanic intact.
Motion Twin is releasing the Windblown Revenge Update sometime in December, with even more updates to come throughout the Steam Early Access period. You can learn more here.
