Smile 2 follows pop singer Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) who is now the one seeing creepy grins everywhere that she goes. And since she’s a famous star, she’s traveling all over and doing press. It’s easy to imagine how it would be tough and inconvenient for someone in her position to be cursed. Smile 2 blends humor with fear-inducing scenes, which is a huge departure from the first movie. The original is brilliantly crafted and has an intelligent and scary tone, but it’s hard to say that there were many laugh out loud moments or even moments that would make someone, well, smile. It was a brutal look at Dr. Rose Cutter’s (Sosie Bacon) family trauma and how she has never been able to truly heal from what she witnessed during her childhood.
Smile 2 was impressive because it told a new tale about another fascinating character, and Scott clearly put her heart and soul into the performance. In an interview with IndieWire, she praised Finn and said:
“I love how uncompromising Parker is on his vision. I love any artist who just is like, ‘She’s never going to defeat this smile. It’s just a very interesting look at how trauma manifests, along with the fear of not being believed or misunderstood and the importance of surrounding ourselves with people that we can be vulnerable with.”
Smile 2 might have had an easy-to-guess ending, but everyone still enjoyed the story. Horror fans are hopeful there will be a Smile 3. Since the premise is about a curse involving chilling grins, there could be a few more films and no one would get tired of it, In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Finn hinted that could be possible if people were fans of the sequel. Since audiences loved this second entry, a fun, impressive, and wildly successful supernatural franchise seems to be in the cards. After all, fans have questions after the Smile 2 ending, and everyone would love to revisit this creepy universe again.
