Developed by indie studio Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is a survival horror title that puts players in the shoes of a ghost hunter and lets them use a range of intriguing equipment, such as EMF detectors, to investigate various haunted locations. They can take up these ghost-hunting contracts alone or as part of a group of up to four players. Phasmophobia‘s PC early access period began on September 18, 2020, soon after which it gained extreme popularity on streaming platforms and became the most-watched game on Twitch at one point. Thanks to its strong reception, the horror title also won the Best Debut Game recognition at The Game Awards 2020.

Phasmophobia Crosses 1 Million Players on Console, Gets Overall Sales Boost
Thanks to Phasmophobia‘s success—first on PC and then with its console ports—its total sales are now close to 22 million, as per Gematsu. Basking in the glory of the co-op title selling 1 million console copies, Kinetic Games’s CEO and Phasmophobia lead developer Daniel Knight said that the “incredible achievement” was only possible because of the game’s “wonderful, supportive and engaged community.” The source further reports Knight saying that the UK-based studio “could not be happier” and labeling the game’s successful console debut as the “best Christmas present” the team could have wished for.
With Phasmophobia out on multiple major platforms, the devs now face a new challenge of catering to player feedback across different systems as they work their way toward an official launch. As for the fans, given the game is an atmospheric experience played from a first-person perspective and hence a good fit for VR, some of them have expressed an interest in seeing the game be ported to a mainstream Meta Quest VR headset in the future.
