Maka Albarn

The Girl With The Anti-Witch Wavelength

Maka Albarn in Soul Eater

Species

Human (Meister)

Powerset

Weapon Meister (Scythe), Anti-Witch Wavelength, Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Episode 1

Series protagonist Maka Albarn of Soul Eater is an ordinary student in DWMA. Assigned to the demon scythe Soul Evans, Maka has a goal to transform him into a Death Weapon that is more powerful than his father, whom she got estranged from for being a serial cheater. With her familial problems in mind, Maka has grown to be a hardworking, smart, direct, and rather responsible individual. These traits often put her at odds with Soul Eater, although her innate brightness and caring personality allowed them to have a fruitful relationship.

Interestingly, Maka is also a rather unique individual with various characteristics. Aside from possessing a unique wavelength and incredible wavelength control, she has a special soul type that gives her the power of flight – making her appear like a witch at times.

First Appearance

Episode 1

Iconic to Soul Eater branding is its white-haired protagonist, Soul Eater Evans, playing the piano – and this is with a reason. Soul is born into a family of musicians but is a Death Weapon also capable of transforming into a scythe. Laidback and cool to a fault, Soul has a tendency to be careless and brash, much to the annoyance of his Meister. He’s also rather known for his love for eating souls and being a general glutton, alongside other notable personality traits such as his humorous immaturity.

However, Soul is no pushover and may be one of the most powerful Demon Weapons in Soul Eater. Despite his brash personality, Soul can become serious when warranted. Not only that, he has a unique “keyboard” form that converts his scythe form into a piano, allowing him to manipulate his wavelength through music. When under Resonance with Maka, Soul allows her to possess an Anti-Demon Wavelength, making them one of the few capable of going toe-to-toe against Madness-users.

Death the Kid

Death the Kid Holding Weapons

Species

Reaper (Meister)

Powerset

Reaper Physiology, Reaper Powers, Weapon Meister (Twin Guns), Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Episode 3

Serving as the son of Death himself, Death the Kid of the Soul Eater anime apparently comes from a “piece of Death” prior to his creation. However, he’s not simply in the DWMA out of nepotism, as his skills alone garnered him a place as one of the top three students in the academy. Characterized as uptight, mature, and calm compared to his companions, Death the Kid is arguably one of the most mature characters in his troupe.

Moreover, Death the Kid has a very strict sense of order and morality, aiming to balance good and evil similar to his father, alongside a rather humble personality. He is also prone to perfectionism, struggling to have all things in order and in perfect symmetry – enough to be extremely disturbed when things aren’t in order. Aside from being a skilled gun meister, Death the Kid very rarely embodies his true nature as a god, unlike in other anime featuring Shinigami like Bleach. Regardless, Death the Kid has his own unique wavelength and levels of power, making him rather a curious character to see the full extent of his abilities.

Liz Thompson in Soul Eater

Species

Demon Weapon

Powerset

Demon Weapon Physiology, Transformation (Gun), Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Episode 3

Serving as the older of the Demon Twin Guns, Elizabeth Thompson of Soul Eater serves as one of two guns wielded exclusively by Death the Kid. Once a ruffian like her sister, Death the Kid found them in the streets before “adopting” them as his Death Weapons. Unlike her sister, Elizabeth is rather moody and cool-headed, although she has an ironic fear of ghosts. Moreover, contrary to rather cheerful Patty, Liz can become jaded and cynical at times.

As Demon Weapons featured in Soul Eater, Elizabeth and Patricia are perfectly in sync, demonstrating equal prowess as M9 Pistols at the hands of their Meister. She also demonstrates remarkable wavelength control and compression, allowing them to “control” the wavelength and power of the shots that Death the Kid releases from their guns.

Contrast to the serious Liz is her younger sister, Patricia Thompson, serving as her cheerful opposite and the second “gun” of the Demon Twin Guns. Previously a petty thief like her sister, Patty got to change her ways during her “adoption” by Death the Kid, who would eventually become their Weapon Meister in Soul Eater.

Patty is best known for her rather childish attitude, which others might dismiss as insensitive and annoying. Unfortunately, her lack of formal education also means Patty isn’t as knowledgeable as other people her age. However, Patty isn’t someone to dismiss and take advantage of, as outside her naivete she has a rather monstrous attitude when angry. Sometimes, her “switch” to a serious mode in a serious situation implies that her cheerful personality may simply be a facade. Like Elizabeth, Patty is in sync with her sister as a weapon, capable of transforming into each other’s hand in times of danger.

Black Star

The World’s Best (And Noisiest) Assassin

Black Star in Soul Eater

Species

Human (Meister)

Powerset

Enhanced Physiology, Master Assassin, Weapon Meister (Ninja Weapons), Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Episode 2

Known for both his rather short stature but rather outstanding charisma and showmanship, Black Star is not only a Death Weapon Meister but is also a master assassin in the Soul Eater anime. Serving as the last survivor of the infamous Star Clan of assassins, Black Star is adopted by DWMA Intelligence Officer Sid Barrett and has been introduced in the ranks of their students.

Compared to other protagonists in Soul Eater like studious Maka and the rather regal Kid, Black Star prefers showmanship as his combat strategy. This doesn’t mean he is to trifle with, however. Black Star is one of the top students in the DWMA, boasting not just martial arts skills but proficiency as a shadow weapon meister, meaning he can handle various kinds of weapons. If anything, Black Star’s only visible weakness is his arrogance and preference for displays of power, something uncharacteristic of his nature as an assassin.

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa

The Multi-Weapon Specialist

Tsubaki in Soul Eater

Species Magic Weapon
Powerset Magic Weapon Physiology, Master Assassin, Transformation (Ninja Weapons), Soul Wavelength Control
First Appearance Episode 2

Accompanying the brash Black Star of Soul Eater is Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, his ever-reliable Death Weapon from the Nakatsukasa family. Coming from a lineage of people raised to be effective Death Weapons, Tsubaki is unique for her nature as a multi-weapon, allowing her to switch forms and weapon types seamlessly. This makes her extremely compatible with Black Star’s training as a shadow weapon meister.

However, Tsubaki isn’t solely in their team as a weapon. After all, some of Soul Eater’s best action scenes often feature her. She is often the voice of reason to Black Star’s impulsive nature. Being one of the oldest characters in the gang, Tsubaki is also just as level-headed as Maka Albarn. Despite her nature as a Death Weapon, Tsubaki is rather kind and generous – something that everyone appreciates but her clan sees as a weakness.

Blair

The Friendly Neighborhood Cat Witch

Blair In Soul Eater With Pumpkin Lanterns

Species Cat Witch
Powerset Transformation (Cat, Human), Nine Lives, Magic (EAT/Witch-level)
First Appearance Episode 1

Frequently seen in the cover art of Soul Eater is Blair, a Cat Witch who is commonly mistaken for a genuine Witch due to her access to Magic. In truth, being a Cat Witch simply endows Blair with the capabilities of using Magic but isn’t like the malevolent Witches that the likes of Maka and Soul hunt in their quest.

The “hunt” for Blair becomes the plot point of the series’ first episode, with the Cat Witch becoming the first “enemy” that lets viewers see the full extent of Maka and Soul’s abilities, a rundown of their personalities, and a showcase of their potential bond. After the first episode, Blair becomes a prominent side character, often providing fan service and comedic relief.

Crona

The Mysterious Black Blood User

Crona of Soul Eater-1

Species Human (Meister)
Powerset Demon Sword Meister (Ragnarok), Madness of the Black Blood, Black Blood Armor, Soul Wavelength Control
First Appearance Episode 7

The timid-looking Crona makes their first appearance in Episode 7 of the anime before becoming a recurring (and eventually main) character throughout the series. Crona is introduced as the introverted child of Medusa Gorgon who possesses not only control over the corrupting Bad Blood but also remarkable talent as a Weapon Meister.

Crona’s introduction also marks the arrival of the Demon Sword Ragnarok, their Demon Weapon whose remarkable “compatibility” with Crona gives their unison the moniker of the Ultimate Weapon. During Maka’s initial encounters with Crona, the latter becomes one of the fiercest enemies Maka will fight in the series.

Medusa Gorgon

Former Nurse With A Vengeance

Medusa Gorgon in Soul Eater

Species Witch
Powerset Witch Physiology, Genius Intellect, Magic (Vector Arrows, Snakes), Soul Wavelength Control, Powerful Soul
First Appearance Episode 7

Appearing initially as Doctor Medusa of the DWMA, Medusa Gorgon eventually reveals her true self as a Witch and becomes one of the most powerful villains Maka and her friends will face across the Soul Eater anime. Indicative of her arrow motif and snake tattoos is her magical prowess presiding over offense and aggression, with spells capable of unleashing snakes that coalesce into lethal arrows.

Throughout the anime series, Medusa will often be the mastermind of some of the most sinister plots to ever befall Maka and her peers in the DWMA. The series will also explore her conflicting relationship with her child Crona, as well as schemes that would put her alongside the likes of Naruto’s Orochimaru as a character with a penchant for experimentation.

Franken Stein

The DWMA’s Best Graduate

Franken Stein in Soul Eater-1

Species Human (Meister)
Powerset Enhanced Physiology, Genius Intellect, Death Weapon Meister, Strongest DWMA Graduate, Soul Wavelength Control
First Appearance Episode 5

Taking the role of the mentor in the shonen anime, Franken Stein of Soul Eater holds the reputation of being the “strongest DWMA Graduate” who now serves as one of the teachers in the Death Weapon Meister Academy. Despite his rugged appearance and trademark stitches, Franken Stein is one of the series’ most capable fighters, with his advanced combat knowledge and capability to wield Demon Weapons making his fights eager to watch.

Moreover, Franken’s role as a mentor will eventually be significant to Maka and her comrades’ progression as academy students. Outside his cold exterior is a caring professor more than willing to help Maka and other students showcase their true potential – something that the events of the shonen anime will force Franken Stein to do much quicker than expected.

Death

Protector Of The World

Shinigami in Soul Eater

Species God
Powerset Immortality, Creation, Reaper Powers, Soul Wavelength Control
First Appearance Episode 1

Being the token principal of the school-themed shonen anime, Death of Soul Eater appears remarkably timid despite his name. However, beneath his cheerful exterior is a powerful god willing to do anything to protect his home, establishing the Death Weapon Meister Academy specifically to cultivate students to fight monsters like the Kishin and Witches.

While his role in the story is often relegated to the background, his involvement in the life of his son, Death the Kid, will eventually catapult Death’s importance in the story to the limelight. Throughout the course of Soul Eater, Death will slowly showcase the full extent of his powers and reveal the full nature of his divinity in their current world.

Spirit Albarn

Death’s Strongest Death Scythe

Spirit Albarn

Species

Demon Weapon

Powerset

Most Powerful Death Scythe, Death Weapon Physiology, Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Prologue #1

It’s said that the highest ranking a Demon Weapon can attain is the Death Scythe – the honor to be wielded as an armament of Death himself. And among Death’s signature weapons, Spirit Albarn is considered the strongest. Despite only being transformed into a Demon Weapon by Maka’s mother, Spirit is one of the most skilled Demon Weapons to ever exist in the Soul Eater series. Hidden behind his obnoxious demeanor is a man filled with both passion and compassion, as he takes his job seriously as a Death Scythe.

In the story, Spirit has an on-off relationship with his daughter Maka, although he remains one of the major members of the series’ supporting cast. Spirit’s combat prowess and Soul Wavelength Control are definitely inherited by Maka, even though she herself is a Meister and not a Demon Weapon.

Sid Barrett

A Teacher And Spy Rolled Into One

Sid Barrett

Species

Zombie

Powerset

Practical Immortality, Martial Arts, Assassination, Soul-Sensing

First Appearance

Episode 3

The zombie Sid Barrett makes his first appearance early in the series, first appearing in Episode 3 of the anime as a teacher in the DWMA. Sid eventually involves his students in a remedial class in Episode 4, where they have to capture him in a graveyard or risk being expelled. After learning that a mad scientist was responsible for Sid’s transformation into a zombie, this lesson leads directly to Episode 5, the first appearance of Franken Stein. Most other instances of Sid’s appearances in the anime involve teaching his students – or at least cleaning up after the antics of Maka, Kid, and Black Star.

What’s interesting, however, is Sid’s involvement in matters outside the classroom. As the anime reveals, Sid is also a skilled spy of the DWMA Central Intelligence Agency. This places Sid in a position of being a talented infiltrator as well as assassin, with his combat skill matching that of trained fighters such as Black Star and the samurai Mifune. Sid is also a trusted confidant of many DWMA members, with Stein confiding in him regarding suspicious individuals and even Death himself assigning him to critical matters.

Marie Mjolnir

The Kind But Electrifying Hammer

Marie Mjolnir

Species

Demon Weapon, Death Scythe

Powerset

Death Scythe Physiology, Demon Hammer, Lightning Generation, and Manipulation

First Appearance

Episode 25

While initially introduced as bubbly and rather obsessed with settling down with her future husband, the rather cute Marie Mjolnir isn’t a slouch to underestimate. Marie goes to Death City after the return of the Kishin Asura, wherein she begins teaching at the DWMA while keeping an eye out for his Madness Wavelength. It’s during this time that it’s learned that Marie is one of Death’s most powerful Demon Weapons – a Death Scythe.

This time, however, Marie takes the form of the Lightning Hammer Mjolnir, which has a powerset that combines the pulverizing power of a hammer and electrifying currents. Marie will see herself paired with Franken Stein, her ex-boyfriend, all the time – something that resulted in quite a lot of hijinks throughout the series.

Excalibur

The Most Powerful – And Annoying – Weapon

Excalibur

Species

Great Old One

Powerset

Great Old One Physiology, Holy Sword

First Appearance

Episode 9

In a world with supernatural creatures, Soul Eater surprises viewers with the inclusion of Excalibur in its mythos. Consistent with its real-world mythological counterpart, Excalibur is also a powerful sword in the anime. In fact, it’s the most powerful weapon in the world – making it a target of Death the Kid for its symmetry and Black Star for the fame it would bring him. While they do find the sword, they are also bewildered by what it came with: a conceited and chatty humanoid who declares he came with 1,000 Provisions for anyone who would want to wield him. Deciding this was not worth the time, the two Meisters leave him to his devices.

However, despite Excalibur’s rather annoying appearance, he does hide a secret: he’s one of the Great Old Ones, the very first beings in existence. While this isn’t revealed in the anime, it’s stated that Excalibur possesses a unique Madness Wavelength called the Madness of Anger. Not much is known about this Wavelength, except perhaps the fact that the name implies Excalibur is capable of annoying anyone who tries to bond with him.

Justin Law

Musically-Inclined Mad Genius

Justin Law

Species

Demon Weapon, Death Scythe

Powerset

Death Scythe Physiology, Magic Guillotine, Soul Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Episode 25

Introduced with his iconic priestly robes, Justin Law makes himself known in the Soul Eater anime as someone who intently reveres Death. As one of Death’s internationally assigned Death Scythes, he’s called back to Death City upon the return of the Kishin Asura. Unlike in the manga where Justin eventually allies himself with the Kishin, Justin in the anime remains faithful to the DWMA throughout the entire series. Instead of being notable as a villain in the manga, Justin is presented in the anime as quirky – he consistently blasts music in his ears and even has a religious way of acting and speaking.

These quirks don’t make Justin Law any weaker in the anime, however. Justin Law is the youngest person to ever achieve Death Scythe status. His reverence for Death allows him to amplify his Soul Wavelength simply by praying to him. Not only that, he is a Demon Weapon capable of acting without a Meister. Such is Justin’s combat prowess that his unassuming guillotine form is quite powerful, as he’s capable of creating guillotine-themed traps to attack opponents.

Arachne Gorgon

The More Fashionable Gorgon Sister

Arachne Gorgon in Soul Eater

Species

Witch

Powerset

Witch Physiology, Magic, Requiem of Madness, Madness Wavelength

First Appearance

Chapter 25, Episode 29

Revealed halfway through the series, Arachne Gorgon is the eldest of the Gorgon Sisters and takes the lead as the major antagonist of her Soul Eater arc with a pragmatically sinister yet fashionable personality that separates her from her sister, Medusa. Considered the “darkest blemish” of the Witch Order, Arachne’s skill in magic is coupled with her training in Madness, allowing her to wield it in such a way that she can transform into a spider-like monster. Even in her original Witch form, Arachne can launch telepathic attacks and create enigmatic Demon Tools, cementing her notoriety in the Soul Eater world.

As a villain, Arachne offers a breath of fresh air from the sheer ruthlessness of Medusa. The elder Gorgon delights in making light of situations, with barely any sight of pure anger or frustration. Throughout her appearance in the series, Arachne makes for both an interesting and stylish foe.

Eibon

The Lord Of Everything About Knowledge

Eibon in Soul Eater

Species

Wizard

Powerset

Wizard, Immense Magic, Wavelength Control

First Appearance

Chapter 16, Episode 35

Appearing quite early in the series, Eibon is an enigmatic masked figure that serves as a driving force for much of the major plot points in the Soul Eater series. Considered a Wizard and among the oldest beings in the universe, Eibon presides over all knowledge, and his access to magical abilities resulted in the creation of Demon Weapons and even the Book of Eibon.

Ever the curious being, Eibon is defined in both the anime and the manga as someone who focuses on attaining and preserving knowledge at all costs. He doesn’t pose that much of a threat throughout the entire series, as much of his goal is dedicated to becoming immortal for the sake of his deceased wife. Eibon’s presence as a supporting character can motivate fans to see just how others would go in order to access even a fraction of what Eibon knows.

Asura

Death’s Strongest Guardian

Asura in Soul Eater

Species

Kishin

Powerset

Kishin Physiology, Madness Control

First Appearance

Chapter 16, Episode 19

Among the more interesting alterations that Soul Eater made separate from the manga would be Asura, the series’ final antagonist. Originally stated in the manga as Death’s disgraced son, Soul Eater‘s main villain in the anime is instead the strongest of Death’s Eight Guardians. Despite being a close friend of Death, Asura’s obsession with power has led him to absorb souls and become a Kishin, an extremely dangerous being who can manipulate Madness.

Fire Force witnessed some pretty interesting arcs. These examples are some of the best of the bunch.

Considered as the very embodiment of Madness itself, Asura is the most dangerous being to ever exist. Such was Asura’s twisted vision of “true peace” that he thinks succumbing to Madness to eliminate all semblance of fear and pain is the true path to salvation. Despite his intentions bordering on evil, Asura genuinely believes that drowning the world in Madness can result in a “greater” good – making him an interesting villain to Maka’s own strong sense of courage.

Little Ogre

The Devil On Soul’s Shoulders

Little Ogre

Species

Manifestation of the Black Blood

Powerset

Manipulation, Coercion

First Appearance

Episode 12

A lot of protagonists in anime often have “darker” personalities, but they often manifest as alternate personalities. In the case of Soul Evans in Soul Eater, this comes in the form of Little Ogre – a rather imp-like creature with large eyes and long arms wearing quite the classy suit. He hasn’t always been there from the start, however, as he’s only appeared in Soul’s consciousness when Soul had interacted with the Black Blood of Madness.

What makes Little Ogre so dangerous isn’t just how he always tries to coax and manipulate Soul into reveling in the inner Madness inside of him. Rather, he keeps on trying to drag Soul deep into the darkest corners of his consciousness until he eventually overpowers him. Little Ogre and Soul’s constant fight for his mind is an ever-present part of Soul Eater fights, especially when Maka is pushed into a corner and Soul has to find a way to save her.

Ragnarok

The Loud-Mouthed Companion To Quiet Crona

Ragnarok

Species

Artificial Demon Sword

Powerset

Black Blood Composition, Transformation, Sword Form

First Appearance

Episode 7

What makes Crona extremely dangerous in Soul Eater isn’t just in their meek personality being capable of devolving into something completely murderous. Rather, a part of it lies in the presence of Ragnarok, a being of purely maddening Black Blood that is always attached to Crona. Being the “other half” of Medusa’s attempt to create a Kishin and the Ultimate Weapon, Ragnarok is comprised of pure Madness – to the point of having fully integrated into Crona throughout the duration of the series.

As a Demon Sword, Ragnarok uses his Black Blood composition to transform into a sword that can cut through almost anything – with his Black Blood capable of instilling Madness into anyone it touches. His unique physiology also allows him to aid Crona even outside of his weapon form, as he can transform into wings and other useful objects. Personality-wise, Ragnarok is the loud-mouthed equivalent of Crona’s quiet personality. He’s a full-grown bully – rude by default and is easily provoked.

Eruka Frog

Coerced To Work For Medusa

Eruka Frog

Species

Witch

Powerset

Magic, Calculation Spells, Soul Protect, Transformation Magic

First Appearance

Episode 12

Similar to other Witches in the series, Eruka Frog has an appearance inspired by her namesake – a green-oriented color scheme, with a yellow hat with large eye-like features. Although also destructive like other Witches, Eruka isn’t as merciless. In fact, the only reason why she’s become a minor antagonist in the Soul Eater series is through Medusa Gorgon’s coercion. Eruka will demonstrate a certain degree of regret for her actions working at Medusa’s behest throughout the series, giving viewers a look into the reality that not all Witches are inherently evil.

As a Witch, Eruka naturally knows how to use Magic. Unlike the likes of Medusa, however, Eruka focuses more on supportive types of spells – she can use Calculation Spells to support other magic that needs precision, and she can even disguise her soul to appear as though she’s a normal human being. In times of emergencies, she may even turn into a frog.

Giriko

A Brash Magic Weapon With Quite The Brutality Streak

Giriko

Species

Magic Weapon

Powerset

Chainsaw Transformation, Combat Prowess

First Appearance

Episode 26

Initially known as Saw the Loew Village Enchanter, Giriko reveals himself as a man of many talents – all of them brutal, lethal, and nowhere near benevolent. Revealed as a member of the Arachnophobia inner circle, Giriko not only holds a position of power and leadership but possesses powers that place him on top of the food chain among Magic Weapons. Giriko’s brutality is matched with a Murderous Wavelength, allowing him to use his special talents to create more destructive attacks. As a Magic Weapon, he can even transform parts of his body and his entire body into a chainsaw – he can use his chains as armor and turn his limbs into saws to cut through opponents.

What makes Giriko much deadlier than his opponents is his penchant for sheer violence. Giriko is quite the brash, rude, and impatient individual. He’s not one to hesitate to show his true colors to Arachne, even if he admires her powerful nature. As a person who’s had to pretend to be nice for hundreds of years, Giriko has “stockpiled” the same years’ worth of bloodlust that he’s just eager to unleash at the right time.
