Elden Ring Director Has Good News For Fans

Elden Ring Director Has Good News For Fans

Key Takeaways

  • Hidetaka Miyazaki confirms FromSoftware is not considering a direct sequel to Elden Ring at this time.
  • The director reassured fans that no sequel does not mean the developer is denying the development of the IP, suggesting spin-off titles are on the way.
  • Miyazaki also confirmed FromSoftware is currently working on multiple projects.

Elden Ring’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki has recently teased the future of the FromSoftware IP, suggesting possible spin-offs are in the works instead of a direct sequel to the acclaimed dark fantasy. The Japanese developer has produced several, iconic Soulslike games during its longevity, in addition to Elden Ring, including the Dark Souls franchise, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Miyazaki has confirmed more projects are currently being worked on.

The punishing expanse of Elden Ring’s Lands Between debuted in 2022, rife with unaided exploration and hardcore boss battles, and the game went on to win Game of the Year. Elden Ring recently rocked the gaming industry once again when the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC received a nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. A new rule granted DLCs and expansions admission, and considering Shadow of the Erdtree was nearly the size of a AAA game, many are backing the decision to include it as a nominee.

Elden Ring’s Success Should Lead FromSoftware to Repeat One of its Narrative Tricks

FromSoftware used one trick to help develop Elden Ring’s deep and intricate story, and hopefully, it will be reused when creating a future title.

In an interview with Game Watch (via Dexerto), Miyazaki was asked about the future of the Elden Ring IP, as the fandom is wondering what will succeed Shadow of the Erdtree. Miyazaki immediately crushed hope of a direct sequel, confirming, “At this point, we are not considering developments such as Elden Ring 2.” Thankfully, the director teased Elden Ring could return through other projects, saying, “However, this does not mean that we are denying the development of the IP.” Shadow of the Erdtree could have been a sequel to the base game as it was a large-scale production, but it seems FromSoftware is hard at work on several projects instead of a direct successor.

Elden Ring Director Crushes Sequel Hopes but Doesn’t Deny IP Development

“FromSoftware is running multiple projects as usual. Among them, there are various variations of projects, so I hope you will look forward to them,” Miyazaki continued. Some of these teased projects could be related to Elden Ring, but if a sequel is off the table, perhaps a prequel or spin-off titles are being planned to expand the game’s rich lore. There’s a chance that one of FromSoftware’s projects is a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring, since a movie is already rumored to be in the pipeline. Elden Ring fans believe a series would work better than a movie, and there’s also the possibility it could turn out to be an anime adaptation.

As expansive as Elden Ring’s DLC was, Shadow of the Erdtree seemingly left one feature for a successor to conquer regarding the mount Torrent’s evolution. If FromSoftware does end up making a spin-off, there is plenty to build upon on the shoulders of Elden Ring’s success, and room for new mechanics, characters, and locations to evolve the IP’s sprawling history.
