Critical Role Teases That A Video Game Is In The Works

Key Takeaways

  • Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham have both teased a Critical Role video game.
  • There’s no more information other than the cast being interested, but Willingham hopes to announce something this year, if not early 2025.

Dungeons & Dragons actual play series Critical Role has been expanding into new territory over the last few years, namely with the animated web series The Legend of Vox Machina, but it might go even further with its own dedicated video game.

Critical Role announced Queen By Midnight, but it seems to have been overshadowed by reveals of two new RPG systems from Darrington Press

“We’ve been talking about creating a video game since we first started playing together,” Laura Bailey revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“I would say it’s an active pursuit on our end,” Travis Willingham added. “The last few years we have been having necessary conversations to figure out how to do that smartly. It’s an entire enterprise that’s separate from what we do on Beacon, Twitch, or YouTube, it’s separate from the animated series and comes with its understanding that has to be undertaken.”

Critical Role Might Announce Something Soon

While Critical Role is keeping its cards close to its chest for now, Willingham teases that it might have something more concrete to share this month, if not next year in time for its tenth anniversary.

We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s worth noting that the Critical Role cast are no strangers to gaming. Bailey is well known for playing Mary Jane Watson and Abby in Spider-Man and The Last of Us respectively. Willingham meanwhile voices Raiden in Mortal Kombat, Wilson Fisk in Spider-Man, and even Knuckles in myriad Sonic games.

These collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels.

Matthew Mercer is another key figure at Critical Role, and he has likewise voiced a slew of iconic characters from Resident Evil’s Leon Kennedy to Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

That’s not to mention that he played one of the companions in the newly released Dungeons & Dragons game Baldur’s Gate 3 — Minsc. And Larian Studios’ award-winning hit is doing even better this year than when it launched last August.

Understandably then, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have both expressed interest in capitalising on this success with even more games, so what better than Critical Role jumping in on the action?
