Classic RTS revival Commandos Origins is delayed, but you can still try it now

It’s been far too long since the last, proper new Commandos game. The WW2 tactics experience has long been a stalwart of the strategy genre, and Commandos Origins is finally about to carve out a new place for the series. With titans like XCOM and Command and Conquer largely quiet these days, now’s the perfect time for Commandos to come back. The bad news is a fresh delay means we’ll have to wait a little longer, but the good news is that Commandos Origins will be even better because of it. Oh, and you can still take the demo for a spin.

Commandos Origins plans to take the stealth RTS game series back to its former glory. Acting as a prequel, you take control of an elite WW2 squadron and order them around tense, isometric stealth missions. There’s the Green Beret, Sapper, Sniper, Driver, Marine, and Spy, each of which can help you embrace different strategies to complete your mission. Forget the heart-pounding decisions of XCOM 2, because Commandos Origins puts you in the greatest theater known to man.

Sadly, after Claymore Game Studios recently made the game’s Steam demo available, the full launch has been delayed. Don’t fret too much though, because it’s actually for the best. The team has been listening to feedback and has plenty of actions it promises to take to improve the overall experience. And, if you’ve not played the Commandos Origins demo yet, it’s still available.

“First of all, we need to express our deepest thanks to our community – your enthusiasm and love for the series is truly special and makes us feel even more honored to be working on such a beloved and long-awaited title,” Claymore Game Studios says in a new dev log. “Your feedback has been incredibly inspiring and motivating! Of course, there were also critiques – the majority of which were very detailed and well thought out.”

Claymore Game Studios also shares nine of the biggest feedback topics it received now that people have played the demo, while outlining exactly what it plans to do about each with the extra development time thanks to the delay. Overall performance optimization is “a top priority” to ensure Commandos Origins has a “fluid gameplay experience.”

The team is also going to enhance AI behavior, as many reported that it wasn’t reacting as expected and often disrupted the flow of the gameplay. Claymore Game Studios also adds that the current voiceovers are temporary and that the full game will feature even more voiced lines.

Some players also said that the controls weren’t “intuitive enough,” but Claymore Game Studios adds that it is taking another look at keybindings. This means there will be three control schemes at launch, alongside custom key bindings as well. You’ll also have non-lethal combat options, meaning you can knock out enemies for even more strategic depth.

A modernized loot system is also coming to Commandos Origins, which the developer says “aligns with our vision of staying true to the Commandos series’ core, prioritizing stealth rather than giving the player the ability to just blast into enemy territory.”

To close, Claymore Game Studios adds that the full game will feature more open maps than the demo, while the UI and UX will be refined based on some of the feedback.

Commandos Origins has been pushed back to a launch window of March 2025 after player feedback from the demo, which you can still try right now. You can give it a go right here.
