If you’ve been waiting to dive back into Blasphemous 2, now’s the perfect time. Not only is there the new and expansive Mea Culpa DLC, but developer The Game Kitchen has just released a free update, and it makes your next run in the Metroidvania even harder if you want it to be. So if you’ve got a finished save file, or think you might be close to the end, you can jump back in and ramp up the challenge. The Game Kitchen has even given you the choice to make your next run-through a bit less challenging, but still tough.
The Blasphemous 2 Balance and True Torment Patch now gives you more choices if you decide to start a New Game Plus run. Previously, if you Ascended your save on the main menu after completing the Metroidvania game you’d be sent right back to the start, sans many of your upgrades. You’d also face stronger enemies that all have more health, presenting you with the ultimate challenge.
Now, developer The Game Kitchen is giving you more of a choice. If you Ascend your save file as normal, you’ll now keep your weapons, figures, prayers, rosary beads, and a select few other items. This plays more like a traditional New Game Plus run, where you keep your upgrades but face stronger foes.
If you want to punish yourself, however, you can. Ultimate Torment is a new challenge you can select when Ascending your save, where all your weapons, figures, prayers, and rosary beads will be removed, just as they were before this update. You cannot reverse this choice midway through a save, so only take it on if you’ve got what it takes.
As The Game Kitchen has now given you this choice, the team has also made some balance adjustments. “As we have changed the way that True Torment works, we have significantly rebalanced enemies, bosses, and individual challenges when playing on an Ascended save.”
The Blasphemous 2 Balance and True Torment Patch is available in the game right now for free. You can get involved here, alongside a 50% off deal as a part of the Steam Autumn Sale.
