Without a doubt one of the most one-sided fights in Bleach, Ganju’s heroic attempt to protect Hanataro and Rukia from Byakuya ends in miserable failure for the naive bull rider. At this point in the story, though Byakuya had been mentioned in passing, this was the first time fans got to witness just how absurdly strong he actually was in practice.

After Ganju lunges his sword at Byakuya, the captain immediately appears behind him, causing Ganju to spill out a pool of blood after being slashed. The battle against Gerard Valkyrie is one of the final fights in the series of Bleach, and while there are a few characters involved, Byakuya is the one who ultimately kicks it off. Byakuya in this fight feels a lot more cruel and aggressive than usual, even attempting to pummel Gerard with a wave of Senbonzakura petals before the Sternritter can even finish explaining his powers.

This seems to be a subtle indication as to how much Byakuya truly hates the Sternritter for not only almost wiping out the Soul Society but also for nearly taking the life of his own sister Rukia. Since there are so many players in this fight, though, it does mean Byakuya gets sidelined for a good chunk of it, but he still lands a few powerful blows here and there to show how powerful he has become by the end of the series.

6 Byakuya & Kenpachi Vs. Yammy

A Slightly More Casual And Fun Fight For Byakuya

When it was suddenly revealed that Yammy, the hot-headed oaf of the Espada, was actually the strongest of the bunch, it became unclear who out of the Soul Reapers would be powerful enough to put him down. In the end, it was managed by a combination of both Kenpachi and Byakuya in what ends up becoming a pretty comical battle.

As the two captains mock one another while simultaneously chopping up Yammy with their blades, things reach a boiling point when they lunge toward one another as if they’re about to engage in combat. Realizing Yammy is still right behind them, the two unleash a devastating attack that knocks him back, before finally defeating him. This is one of those rare battles where Byakuya can be shown having a little bit of fun while also fleshing out his relationship with Kenpachi, which is barely ever touched on again.

5 Byakuya Vs. Renji

Byakuya Doesn’t Think Twice About Taking Down His Own Lieutenant, Showing How Merciless He Can Be

Though this battle is admittedly quite brief, it still manages to say a lot not about only Renji but also Byakuya’s character. In a desperate attempt to save Rukia from her execution, Renji turns on his captain and even unleashes his Bankai in an attempt to stop him in his tracks.

Though Byakuya is initially quite surprised at Renji’s newfound strength, he inevitably crushes his lieutenant without a second thought. It just goes to show how merciless Byakuya was at this stage in the story, willingly striking down his own lieutenant for the sake of upholding the law. It would be a battle that also further hyped him up as the big bad villain of the arc, making fans wonder how Ichigo would stand a chance of defeating him.

4 Byakuya Vs. Tsukishima

One Of Byakuya’s Most Tactical Battles Sees Him Outsmarting The Mastermind Tsukishima

Tsukishima’s Book of the End ability allows him to insert himself into a person’s past after slashing them with his blade. He’s therefore more of a trickster than a fighter, but when Byakuya takes him on near the end of the Fullbring arc, he actually almost succeeds in taking the captain down due to knowing all of his moves after attacking him.

Eventually, Tsukishima uncovers the ‘Safe Zone,’ which keeps Byakuya protected whenever he activates his Bankai, and attempts to use this information to manipulate him. Despite all of this, Byakuya manages to remain calm and collected, mocking Tsukishima and eventually outsmarting him at his own game to deliver a final blow straight through the chest. If there was any fight that proved Byakuya is as smart as he is powerful, this is most definitely the one.

A Grueling Fight With Underlying Themes About Pride And Ego

Zommari is genuinely one of the most terrifying enemies in all of Bleach. His ability enables him to take control of anything he gazes at, which causes a lot of trouble for Byakuya. Additionally, Zommari is also able to create up to 5 doppelgangers, which Byakuya is forced to cut down one by one, all while telling Zommari he is entirely outclassed.

This fight is not only a battle of the minds, but also words, as the two go back and forth on how much pride and arrogance they each hold as fighters. Zommari’s view that Soul Reapers are unjustly killing Hollows for their own satisfaction forces Byakuya to correct him by uttering the now iconic line “I’m slaying you because you pointed your blade at my pride,” in reference to his younger sister, Rukia.

Seeing Byakuya’s spirit being completely crushed as he gets pelted by the razor-sharp petals of Senbonzakura is honestly a heartbreaking watch and really demonstrates just how powerful this new army of Quincies truly is. Some fans believe that Byakuya actually losing his life here would have made the fight even more impactful, but it also means he wouldn’t have been able to share that special moment with Rukia later on.
