Key Takeaways

- Delayed release due to WB scheduling changes; film set to hit theaters on Dec 13, 2024.
- Exciting to see Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, and the late Christopher Lee return to Middle Earth.
Two legendary actors from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy will be making their return to Tolkien’s fantasy setting of Middle Earth to take on the roles of characters in the upcoming animation movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is also the mind behind Ghost in the Shell and Ultraman, and set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The War of the Rohirrim will tell the narrative of the ninth King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, the last of the original line of succession, as he and his family wage a war against an army of Dunlendings in the stronghold of the Hornburg, a fortress that later becomes known as Helm’s Deep.
Last year, it was revealed that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim‘s release date had been delayed due to scheduling changes by Warner Bros, alongside the eagerly anticipated Dune 2 because of the SAG strike. Even though Lord of the Rings enthusiasts have had a lengthy wait to face before diving back into the iconic fantasy world once more, it’s now only a matter of days until The War of the Rohirrim releases in theaters, and it seems as though two iconic characters from the trilogy are making a surprise comeback that long-term Peter Jackson fans should listen out for.

Lord of the Rings’ Billy Boyd And Dominic Monaghan Are Back For Animation
Lord of the Rings just wouldn’t be the same without Billy Boyd, who plays Pippin Took, and Dominic Monaghan, as Merry Brandybuck. The two legendary LoTR characters have been in all three of Jackson’s movies and offer some light-hearted and silly intervals throughout the film’s more, at times, serious demeanor. Initially spotted by a fan and then reposted by the official Instagram account for Lord of the Rings, it seems as though the iconic duo are set to make their return (or at least their voices are) to the upcoming animation movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Noticed during a featurette that Entertainment Weekly showcased about the animation, Dominic and Billy can be clearly seen in front of a mic in a studio reciting lines.
Although it’s not clear yet who Billy and Dominic will play in the movie animation, or if they will reprise their roles as Merry and Pippin, which seems unlikely given the era The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set in unless the story begins in the present day and then told through flashbacks, it’s really exciting that the beloved characters are reuniting on the big screen once more. If this news isn’t exciting enough, the late Christopher Lee, who played the role of Saruman the White in the original trilogy, will also make a surprising return to Middle Earth and play a significant role in the movie.
Even though some of these returning characters still lie under a cloak of mystery, it will certainly make The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim compelling viewing and a fantastic addition to the animation. Another highly requested addition that fans would like to see in War of the Rohirrim animation is the sea monster, The Watcher in the Water, a creature that occupies a lake just outside of Moria, mostly due to how little of its backstory is known.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13, 2024.
