PlayStation 2 Fan Finds Rare Collectible From The Console’s Launch

PlayStation 2 Fan Finds Rare Collectible From The Console's Launch

Key Takeaways

  • PS2 launched in 2000, sold over 160 million units, and became the best-selling console ever made.
  • Now, a rare PS2 collectible coin from the console’s 2000 launch has seemingly been found.
  • The coin may have been handed out during a PS2 launch event, as a similar one with a different number has been spotted.

A PlayStation 2 owner took to social media to share a rare collectible coin that was seemingly made during the console’s 2000 launch. Although little information about the legitimacy of the PlayStation 2 (PS2) collectible coin was easily discovered, other users chimed in with their best guesses as to how the coin was obtained in the first place.

Originally released in October 2000 in the US, the PS2 was Sony’s sixth-generation console and competed against the GameCube, Xbox, and Dreamcast. As the successor to the original PlayStation system, the PS2 could play original titles and was backward compatible with a majority of PS1 games and peripherals. Between its vast game library, the capability to play both music CDs and DVD movies, and its affordable $299 price tag at launch, the PS2 quickly became the best-selling console of all time. During the PlayStation 30th Anniversary celebrations, Sony stated that the PS2 sold over 160 million units during its lifespan, which topped the previous mark of 158.3 million.

The director of the surprisingly viral and creepy Winnie the Pooh game starring Piglet confirms Capcom’s Resident Evil was a source of inspiration.

Although the PS2 is home to some hidden gems as far as games go, one fan discovered a rare find from their childhood. A Reddit user named TalenG5 posted pictures of a silver coin on the r/playstation subreddit. The coin was colored silver, with two different designs on each side. In the first screenshot shared by TalenG5, the coin had the design of the original PS2 engraved, and it depicted the console in its vertical position. The date October 26, 2000, was engraved on the side, which matched the date of the PS2’s launch in the US. On the other side of the coin, the PlayStation brand logo was engraved, along with the number 228 below it, which may be an indicator of how many coins were printed.

PlayStation 2 Fan Discovers A Rare Coin Seemingly From The Console’s Launch

TalenG5 said they found the coin in some boxes from their childhood, but could not find any information about the coin online to prove if it was a legitimate collectible or not. In response, other PlayStation fans guessed that the coin was handed out during the PS2’s launch window as a placeholder token given to customers waiting in line to purchase the console. Another Redditor, named Jellyfishcactus, replied that another coin similar to TalenG5’s was posted online, with the number 454 on the reverse side rather than 228.

While the console has long been discontinued, several PS2 games have returned via the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription service for players to enjoy. With the PS2 turning 25 in 2025, it remains to be seen how PlayStation and its fans will celebrate the occasion.
