Last week, rumours surfaced that Mortal Kombat 1’s next wave of DLC had been cancelled, including Kombat Pack 3 and a second story expansion. NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has commented on the reports yet, but Ed Boon has responded to fans on Bluesky about the news.
“Hope everybody is okay with all those leaks,” wrote one such fan, as pointed out by Reddit user Downtown_External808. “Still hoping for kp3”.
“I appreciate the kind words,” Boon replied. It’s not a confirmation or a denial, but it’s the first time the rumours have been addressed since they broke. Read into his reply what you will, but many are taking it as proof that the reports are true.
What Could Have Been
Shortly after reports broke that future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC had been axed, reliable leaker _FateUnknown_ claimed that the next Kombat Pack would’ve included Jade, Cassie Cage, Kung Jin, Sonya, and Kano, bringing OG characters and fan-favourites to the game at long last.
The sixth character would have allegedly been a “highly requested” guest fighter.
Following this news, one fan posted on Bluesky, “Don’t Cancel kp3 plz […] Sonya, kano, Jax, Nightwolf, Kabal, Skarlet, Jade, Fujin, Onaga, Shinnok, Goro, Kintaro, Sheeva being the rest characters for the game support [sic] Plz it will sell”.
Boon didn’t comment on any potential future characters, nor the reports of what Kombat Pack 3 would have included, but he did reply, “That’s a lot of fighters!”
We don’t have any official word on what the future holds for the series, but we at least know that Mortal Kombat is one of four properties Warner Bros. will focus on going forward. Whether that’s a new game or something else entirely, only time will tell.
Mortal Kombat 1 reboots the popular fighting game’s universe, following Liu Kang’s altering of the events of Mortal Kombat 11. It features a broad range of fighters, an expanded story, and the all-new Kameo fighter system.
