Key Takeaways
- Godzilla is finally in Fortnite as part of the live-service battle royale’s Chapter 6 update, among other additions.
- With Godzilla in the fold, one of the Internet’s longest running memes of the Kaiju dunking a basketball can be recreated.
- The meme originally began in the early 1990s as a result of a Nike commercial, and has been a fixture of the Internet ever since.
Fortnite’s long-awaited Chapter 6 update is finally here, and there is a lot to unpack. The Season 1 “Hunters” map has been revealed, along with its POIs, as well as the skins included in the Battle Pass, along with the return of Hitscan and the debut of Oni Masks and Sprites.
Like we said, it’s a lot of stuff.
Perhaps one of the best elements of Chapter 6 is the addition of Godzilla as a skin. The Japanese Kaiju had been a long-rumored skin, and he is as glorious as he should be. And with Fortnite Kicks being a thing, one of the Internet’s greatest memes has been recreated within Epic Games‘ free-to-play live-service shooter.

Cell Has Some Basketball Competition
By equipping Godzilla with some signature Jordan’s, along with the Slam Dunk emote, the long-running meme of The King of the Monsters being a part-time hooper can be recreated.
For the uninitiated, Godzilla wearing Jordan’s and dunking a basketball dates all the way back to 1992, when Nike aired a commercial featuring the Kaiju competing against Charles Barkley.
Somehow, that commercial became a comic book titled “Godzilla vs. Barkley,” which was published by Dark Horse comics. There, a panel of Godzilla wearing Nike shoes and dunking a basketball became a viral hit.
Now, flash forward to 2024, and that same meme can be recreated in Fortnite. One Twitter user went as far as to transport the text of the panel into the 2024 iteration of the meme.
That’s not all Godzilla can do, either. Because if dunking wasn’t enough already, Godzilla can also hit the Griddy, along with seemingly every popular Fortnite dance emote.
Memes are one of the best things about the Internet, and few do it quite like Fortnite. Whether it’s Dragon Ball Z’s Cell being a part-time basketball player, or Godzilla dunking in his spare time, you can bet that players will continue to recreate the Internet whenever given the chance.
