The most recent debate on which Final Fantasy Monk is the best was started by Redditor CrystalBraver over on the Final Fantasy subreddit. Now, before discussing the results, let’s make one thing clear – Tifa is the most obvious choice for the winner of favourite Monk since her game, Final Fantasy 7, is not only one of the highest-regarded in the series, but also topical with Remake and Rebirth.

Surprisingly, though, that doesn’t seem to be the conclusion that the thread has come to. As of the time of writing, the most popular comment calls out Final Fantasy 6’s Sabin as being the favourite Monk party member, with the simple explanation that, “You can’t beat a guy who suplexed a train”. That’s a fair amount of evidence there, but it’s far from the only comment suggesting Sabin is the best.
Another comment reads, “There are many monks, but only one suplexes a train, no contest”, while another Final Fantasy fan says, “It’s Sabin, and it’s by a lot”. Tifa isn’t even the second most-voted character, as Final Fantasy 4’s Yang is also called out as a fan-favourite, while Final Fantasy 8’s Zell is the third most-mentioned Monk in the thread.
Tifa might not be getting that much love as the number one pick, but she’s still mentioned a lot in the thread and is clearly who comes to mind for a lot of fans. She’s just not considered the best Monk in the series for those who have played more Final Fantasy games than just the Remake trilogy.
