Dragon Age: The Veilguard has plenty of side quests, including both companion quests and location quests. For most of these quests, you must talk to someone or read a note to begin. However, it’s entirely possible to begin a quest with a battle.
At least, that’s the case for “Mercenary Intent,” a quest that takes place in the Dock Town of Minrathous in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You might expect a person with a problem when you visit the exclamation point in the Smuggler’s Docks area, but instead you’ll fight a large group of mercenaries, followed by a group of Venatori.

Where to Find the Warehouse Notes during Mercenary Intent
After you defeat all the mercenaries and Venatori, speak to the person in the green cage on the ship. He’ll mention that the mercenaries have captured others, and that a warehouse is involved. Rook will suggest checking the warehouse that featured in Neve’s first quest, which is across the street from the docks. You normally can’t get into this warehouse, but it opens for this section of “Mercenary Intent.”
There are three notes you need to find in the warehouse:
- One of them is on the wood pillar slightly to the left of the front door.
- One is on a desk in the room with the ladder.
- One is on a desk in the room across the staircase from the room with the ladder.
While you’re on the upper floors of the warehouse, you might overhear two Venatori talking about their plans regarding captives and blood rituals. You can climb up the ladder and fight them, but you don’t need to fight them or overhear their conversation to complete this quest.

Where to Find Low Tide Beach
After you find all three notes, leave the warehouse and head to the beach southeast of the Smuggler’s Docks. You may have visited this beach before during one of Neve’s peaceful quests, and like then, the shack at the far end is now open.
Some players may encounter a bug where the shack door is closed even though the Venatori that you’re supposed to fight are waiting on the other side. If that happens to you, save and reload the game. The door should be open when you return.
The fight on Low Tide Beach involves fewer people than the mercenary fight that started the quest, but you have to fight more of them at once, and they include more powerful enemy types. They include a war mage, a cult mage, two centurions, one soldier, and one executioner.
- As always, it’s a good idea to focus on the mages first, which will limit your enemies’ ranged options.
- The executioner is fast and unrelenting, and may force you to pay attention to him when you’d rather attack someone else.
- Remember that shield enemies can only protect themselves from the front.
After you win this fight, speak to the caged qunari to finish the quest. Your rewards include 500 XP, armor (or an armor upgrade), and +100 Shadow Dragons Strength. You should also check the spot where the war mage fell, since he drops a chest that seems to hold the same armor you get from completing the quest. This means you get two rarity upgrades in a row.
