Dragon Age: The Veilguard – A Murder of Crows Walkthrough

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - A Murder of Crows Walkthrough

Whether or not you save Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Lucanis’ story features plenty of assassinations, backstabbing, and betrayals. All these divided loyalties then come to a head in the quest “A Murder of Crows.”

Earlier quests have proven that Lucanis’ cousin Illario was working with the Venatori to get rid of him, but they also showed that their grandmother, Catarina, was still alive. This means that this Dragon Age: The Veilguard quest has two parts: to first save Catarina from Illario, and to then save the Crows from his influence.

Where to Find Every Collectible in Villa Dellamorte

The Villa Dellamorte is a large, expansive area that may confuse some players who want to explore every corner and find every item. However, the manor is more straightforward than it first appears, and every side route is nothing more than a winding dead end. Here’s where to go to find every unique pickup in the mansion, and the best order to collect them in:

  • In the cellar, go straight forward (south) from the entrance you used to find a small chest.
  • There’s a Memento tucked between two stacks of barrels on the east wall.
  • In the kitchen where you fight two Venatori guards, check behind some shelves to the left of the fireplace for a Memento.
  • After you enter the big foyer where Lucanis welcomes you to Villa Dellamorte, keep going north into the room full of dust cloths. There’s a large chest concealed behind the furniture.
  • Climb the first staircase to the right (south) and look for a Memento between three couches.
  • In the hallway behind the three-couch room is a small chest guarded by an Unstoppable Executioner.
  • Open the door in the Executioner’s hallway and turn right to collect a Memento on a table.
  • In the eastern section of the foyer, look for a Memento on a table along the south wall.
  • Open the door on the south wall near the Memento to enter a new room and fight a Barraging Venatori Mage. There’s a large chest in this room close to the entrance.
  • In the room north of the east foyer, there’s a Memento on a table under a painting on the south wall.
  • Climb the stairs in this room to find another small chest guarded by another Unstoppable Executioner.
  • In the hallway that leads west from the room, you can open a door that gives you a shortcut back to the foyer.
  • Past the shortcut door is a large room with two Venatori guards. This room also holds a Memento on the table behind the north couch, and a small chest with a note on the table behind the south couch.
  • Past the large room is one last staircase that leads to an upper walkway. Follow it around until you reach a hallway with a door on the right (south) wall. Behind it is a large chest you can see from the foyer.
  • Keep going and defeat the guard at Catarina’s door. However, instead of going in, go through the first door on your right. You’ll find two notes and a Memento at the foot of the bed.
  • After speaking to Catarina, jump down from her balcony into the garden. Take the stairs to the right of where the quest marker wants you to go and run to the end to find a small chest.
  • Check the alcove at the northeast corner of the garden to find another small chest.

There are no more collectibles outside of this garden, so when you’re done you can head straight for the theater where Illario is speaking to the rest of the Crows.

How to Beat Illario

Dragon Age Veilguard Illario

Although every Crow draws a weapon during the scene where Lucanis confronts Illario, you’ll only have to face Illario himself (and three sets of Venatori reinforcements).

  • Illario is (unsurprisingly) an assassin-type enemy. Among other traits, this means he can parry uncharged attacks from the front, teleport around the battlefield, and both move and attack with exceptional speed.
  • When the battle starts, and when Illario reaches two-thirds and one-third of his health bar, two Venatori mages will appear. Illario doesn’t use a special move or signal to summon them, and they appear without any shouting or fanfare, so keep your eyes open for them. A constant barrage of ranged attacks can make this fight much harder than it has to be.
  • The Venatori mages can also heal Illario, extending the fight in the process. Get rid of them as soon as they appear to limit their impact.
  • Although Illario can deflect attacks, he isn’t as good at it as most other assassin-type enemies. If you bring along a warrior as your second companion, you shouldn’t have any trouble landing blows on him.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Baldur’s Gate 3 both heavily feature romance, but they handle it quite differently.

What Should Lucanis Do with Illario?

forgive illario

After you beat Illario, you have to decide what to do with him. Surprisingly, Lucanis has no desire to kill his cousin, and so your options are to free Illario or imprison him.

If you chose Minrathous over Treviso earlier in the game, your only choice now is to imprison Illario. Illario’s actions have caused too much damage to Treviso to be forgiven if the city got hit by the blight.

Something else to note is that the rewards Lucanis gets for each choice don’t appear right away. You’ll need to wait until later in the story for Lucanis to wrap up his business and become a Hero of the Veilguard.

Lucanis Frees Illario

  • Lucanis gets the Veilguard skill Demon of Rebellion, which gives Rook +10 percent Resistance and gives the party 25 percent more damage to barriers.
  • He gets the armor Crow’s Poise, which allows you to chain detonations that target Overwhelmed enemies. A chained detonation also renders enemies vulnerable to necrotic damage, which is Lucanis’ specialty.

Lucanis Imprisons Illario

  • Lucanis gets the Veilguard skill Demon of Defiance, which improves his critical and detonation damage numbers by 50 percent, and all his abilities deal 25 percent more damage to enemies with an affliction.
  • He also gets the armor Crow’s Tenacity, which adds Stagger damage to all nearby enemies when a detonation hits a knocked-down enemy, and which adds an extra 50 percent Stagger damage for each enemy caught in a detonation.

As for immediate rewards, you can open one last large chest after choosing what to do with Illario, and you then get +100 Antivan Crows Strength after returning to the Lighthouse.
