Amazon Prime Video’s Silent River Is A New Take On The Slasher Story

Amazon Prime Video's Silent River Is A New Take On The Slasher Story

Key Takeaways

  • Excitement for upcoming Silent River series due to unique take on slasher genre, focusing on character development.
  • Anticipation for strong performances from actors Rhys and Krasinski in a small town tied together by serial killer.
  • Appreciation for adaptation of We Were Liars young adult novel into engaging TV series full of twists and turns.

Supernatural presences in haunted houses, stories about witches and monsters, and body horror are all important parts of the popular genre. But I have a particular appreciation for slasher movies and like seeing when new movies and TV shows have a fresh approach to the regular formula. I’m equally impressed by remakes like Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil and new stories, which is why I’m looking forward to a recently announced Amazon Prime Video series.

While there aren’t many details available just yet about this new project, this Prime series sounds like the best kind of slasher tale, and I can’t wait. I have high hopes for this TV show, and here’s why I’m sure it will be a hit.

Amazon Prime Video’s Silent River Sounds Compelling And Distinct

John Krasinski playing Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Deadline reported that Matthew Rhys and John Krasinski are starring in a TV series for Amazon Prime Video called Silent River. The story follows two main characters who live in a small town that has been wrecked by a serial killer. As Deadline explained, they also learn that they are tied together in a certain way.

While the plot details are vague and mysterious at this point, I love the sound of this premise. I think this is a new take on the classic slasher story since the series focuses on how people are affected by the presence of a serial killer in their hometown. I love classic slasher movies that are about final girls and minor characters being chased by a masked villain. But, unfortunately, a lot of those films can be boring and disappointing because they follow the same formula. There are only so many times fans can watch someone run up the stairs or make common mistakes.

I’m also excited for Silent River because it sounds like there will be a focus on strong character development. Many slasher movies lack this important ingredient and focus on gory kills and tense moments instead. While of course those are important, I want to watch characters who I can care about and root for. Both actors are also perfect for this type of project. Krasinski did a great job in Jack Ryan and has moved between comedy and drama throughout his career. Rhys gave an impressive performance in the TV drama The Americans, which was full of twists and reveals. I’m excited to learn more about their characters and find out how their lives are intertwined. I’m curious if one of the main characters is actually the serial killer. That would definitely be a fun reveal.

Finally, I think Silent River is a promising upcoming horror TV series because watching characters with big secrets in a small town never gets old. I think this is the best kind of horror movie setting because it’s always creepy and allows for a lot of twists and turns. I also like watching characters who have known each other for years and who learn new things about one another. It proves that people can never truly know their neighbors and friends, no matter how much time they spend together or how long they’ve lived in the same place.

What Other Amazon Prime Video Horror Movies Or TV Shows Are There?

Deborah Ayorinde in Them: season 2

Amazon Prime Video has some scary original programming, including The Devil’s Hour and Them. The Devil’s Hour has had two seasons so far and follows Lucy Chambers (Jessica Raine), who works in the field of social work and has scary visions in the middle of the night. The horror anthology TV seriesThem has also had two seasons and tells two distinct stories. Season 1, THEM: Covenant, is about a Black family moving into a haunted house in 1953. THEM: The Scare is about a detective looking into a murder in 1991.

Nelson Cragg, an executive producer and lead director on THEM, spoke to Decider about working on the series. His comments prove why it’s such a compelling and powerful show. He said:

“Yes, these horrible things happen and happen in real life to people, but … for me it’s about creating a world where you really care about this family. If you care about this family then you can really believe and feel emotions when you see these horrible things happen to them.”

The young adult novel We Were Liars is also being adapted into a TV series for Amazon Prime Video. The novel by E. Lockhart follows a teenage girl named Cadence Sinclair Eastman who is recovering from a head injury. She’s also telling the reader a gripping story about one impactful summer. I loved this novel when I read it several years ago and I think it will make a particularly engaging and scary TV show. There are plenty of twists and turns to excite viewers, and I’m always excited to watch a series that focuses on young adult characters.
