When it comes to sibling relationships in anime, they could either be the best of friends or the epitome of dysfunction. From harmonious relationships to life-long resentments exploding into bitter feuds, things are known to get complicated, but it’s even more so when it’s twins.

8 Smartest Anime Characters
Scheming, inventive, or just plain smart, these anime characters are geniuses.
Some are supportive and in sync with one another, while others can’t stand to be in the same room. You would think that sharing the same womb would push them to get along, but that can’t be the case all the time. So, without further ado, here is a list of the most iconic twins in anime.
10 Ram and Rem
Re:Zero
Born into an Oni village, twin sisters Ram and Rem had different experiences as they grew older. Whereas pink-haired Ram was lauded as a prodigy, her blue-haired twin Rem was seen as lacking in comparison, which severely affected Rem’s way of thinking. The twins became maids for Margrave Roswaal Mathers after he saved them from being killed during an attack on their village.
Ram is more expressive than her twin and can be quite ruthless when the situation calls for it. Despite how differently their community treated them, Ram cares deeply for Rem and is protective of her. Rem, however, appears more indifferent and closed off due to her childhood, but steadily opens up more upon interacting with the show’s main protagonist.
9 Mei and Fujioka Misaki
Another
Mei and Fujioka Misaki were twin sisters who were separated at birth. While Fujioka stayed with her biological mother, Mei was given to her aunt to help her recover from the loss of her own baby. The sisters discovered the truth when they were in grade school and grew closer as a result.
However, by the time the show’s timeline began, Fujioka had died of leukemia. We get a glimpse of the sisters’ affectionate relationship in the OVA episode, where the reserved Mei is noticeably more cheerful and outgoing. Not only was her twin’s death a traumatic experience for Mei, but she was the harbinger of the infamous ‘Class 3-3 Curse’ starting up again.
8 Zero and Ichiru Kiryu
Vampire Knight
Complicated is putting it lightly when it comes to the relationship between identical twins Zero and Ichiru Kiryu. The twins were once close but grew apart after Zero assumed that his twin had died alongside their parents after a vampire attack. In contrast to Zero, Ichiru struggled with his health, and could never reach his full potential to become a vampire hunter like his parents.
As a result, Ichiru grows envious of Zero and is torn between loving and hating his twin. While Zero is considered to be standoffish and cold, Ichiru can be quite sociable and charming. Although the brothers clash from time to time, it is established that the twins care for one another still despite what happened between them.
7 Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin
Ouran High School Host Club
Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are identical twins who are quite attached. As members of the Ouran Host Club – a club that entertains and serves female customers – Hikaru and Kaoru are not afraid of playacting a borderline incestuous gag to make more money for the club. Moreover, they love to play guessing games with everyone, asking them to identify which twin is which.

Is there a better way to make an anime character feel relatable than turning them into a gamer? Thought not.
Before joining the club, the twins had trouble building relationships with others and largely depended on each other. Despite being the younger twin, Kaoru is more temperate and well-rounded than Hikaru, who is more emotionally immature. Although the twins are close, they gradually grow more independent, desiring to shape their own identities.
6 Isami and Takumi Aldini
Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
Fiercely passionate about cooking, twins Isami and Takumi Aldini came from a Japanese-Italian family who ran a renowned Italian restaurant in Florence. The pair fell in love with food and cooking whilst growing up there and were encouraged by their uncle to complete their training at Totsuki Culinary Academy.
Blonde-haired Takumi is fiery and dramatic, with a more competitive spirit than his calmer twin. On the other end, Isami is an altogether cheerful guy, but hides his insecurity regarding his cooking skills, noting that it paled in comparison to Takumi’s. However, the twins are supportive of one another, acknowledging each other’s strengths and working together to stay on top.
5 Muichiro and Yuichiro Tokito
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
A pair of twins with a tragic backstory, they were left orphaned after their father’s accidental death and their mother’s passing from illness. The twins’ suffering was not at an end, however, when the pair were attacked by a demon, resulting in Yuichiro’s death.
Left alone, his older twin’s death spurred Muichiro to fully go down the Demon Slayer route, eventually becoming the Mist Hashira. Although he was warmer when his twin was alive, Muichiro closed down emotionally in the aftermath and suppressed his traumatic memories. He slowly began to open up in time with the bonds he built with his fellow Demon Slayers.
4 Johan Liebert and Nina Fortner
Monster
Although Johan Liebert and Nina Fortner are identical twins, the two could not be more dissimilar in personality. While Nina is shown to be kind and caring despite her traumatic childhood, her brother Johan is the complete opposite. As this psychological horror series‘ main antagonist, Johan is manipulative, supremely intelligent, and a psychopath.
Johan is a serial killer, and a murderer since he was a child. Not only has he killed every foster parent he’s lived with, but he has the talent to sow chaos wherever he goes. He is not above manipulating his twin despite loving her, even assuming her identity if and when it suits him.
3 Sakon and Ukon
Naruto
No set of twins is more aligned than Sakon and Ukon of the Naruto franchise. The leaders of the Sound Four were one of Orochimaru’s loyal henchmen. Both twins are arrogant, taking pride in their skills and relishing the chance to taunt their enemies.

These anime characters have really been through it.
The twins can merge as one being due to their kekkei genkai, including fusing into the bodies of their opponents. They were granted a cursed seal by Orochimaru, which they could tap into for a chakra boost and a physical, power-up type transformation into a demonic-looking creature. Although killed by Kakuro, they were resurrected during the Fourth Shinobi World War and are itching for revenge.
2 Rin and Yukio Okumura
Blue Exorcist
Although both Rin and Yukio Okumura possess good hearts and intentions, they certainly have different ways of going about it. While Rin is more of a delinquent who jumps into fights to shield himself and his friends, Yukio is a serious, academically talented, and more levelheaded person.
The sons of Satan, the twins were raised by an Exorcist and had their powers sealed at birth to protect them and others. The two brothers enroll in True Cross Academy after their father figure’s death, with Yukio becoming a teacher while Rin begins as a student.
1 Maki and Mai Zenin
Jujutsu Kaisen
Maki and Mai Zenin were once close, pushed to rely on one another due to their family’s rejection of them. However, Maki, the older twin, had ambitions to be the Zenin clan head, while Mai was content to live her life as it was. As a result, the twins parted ways.
Whereas Maki attended Tokyo Jujutsu High voluntarily, Mai was forced to tag along to start her training as a sorcerer at the Kyoto branch. Resentment had begun building inside Mai since Maki left, believing her twin had abandoned her. However, the twins still cared for one another, with Mai even sacrificing herself to allow Maki to gain her full potential.
