Kingdom Hearts 2 Fan Finally Adds Colour To Timeless River

Kingdom Hearts 2 Fan Finally Adds Colour To Timeless River

Key Takeaways

  • Timeless River is one of Kingdom Hearts 2’s most inventive and unique worlds due to how it recreates Steamboat Willie’s style.
  • If you’ve ever wondered what it might look like in colour, Nexus Mods creator danimalforlife has answered that question.
  • The Technicolour River mod gives Timeless River a brand new and arguably hard to adjust to look.

A talented Kingdom Hearts 2 fan has finally given us a look at what Timeless River would look like if it was in technicolour instead of completely monochrome.

Ignoring the first Kingdom Hearts and its almost annoyingly inventive worlds (looking at you, Wonderland), most of Sora’s adventures have been criticised for having uninteresting and arena-like designs. This is particularly true of Kingdom Hearts 2, which took the first game’s wild and weird worlds and turned them into endless corridors and enemy-filled rooms.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories, A Mistranslation Changes Everything

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories recently had its 20th anniversary, but a key part of its story is still hidden behind a repeated mistranslation.

As much as I loved that approach over getting lost in Deep Jungle for the millionth time, there is one world in Kingdom Hearts 2 that’s mostly free of that critique – Timeless River. Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s trip to Mickey’s monochrome past is a true fan-favourite and stands out as one of the game’s most interesting Disney worlds.

The main reason for this is Timeless River’s art style, which accurately recreates the monochrome black-and-white look that the original Mickey Mouse cartoons (such as Steamboat Willie) had. Even though Timeless River mostly follows the same layout as the rest of the game, that unique look is what makes it so special.

So, what would happen if Timeless River jumped ahead a few years into the world of Technicolour? That’s something that Kingdom Hearts fans have wondered for quite a while now and, as highlighted by YouTuber TheGamersJoint, it’s exactly the question that Nexus Mods creator danimalforlife has answered.

As you can see in the clip above from TheGamersJoint and on the page for the mod itself, “Technicolor River” adds colour to every facet of Timeless River for the first time, from our main trio to all of the enemies they encounter. It even affects things you might not have expected it to, such as journal entries and pictures.

The mod thankfully keeps Timeless River’s originally grainy audio, so it doesn’t feel too far from the original vision for the world.

As cool as the Technicolour River mod is, the new look for such a stylised world does take some getting used to. After all, Square Enix did craft the world with black-and-white in mind, so some of the new colours do pop in strange ways. Even so, it’s a great effort from danimalforlife and fulfils a wish that fans have had for some time.

I’d much rather the game have a classic feel than fall into the prestige trap of recent Xbox attempts.
