If you enjoyed the game’s campaign, you should definitely try Arena of Gods. This mode stands out from other game modes with its unique system and engaging gameplay, all wrapped up in a compelling story. While Arkantos is not the main character here, you’ll be controlling someone very close to him. If you’re ready, this guide compiles everything you need to know before diving into Arena of Gods!
Arena Of Gods, Explained
Arena of Gods is one of the game modes in Age of Mythology: Retold. This mode begins with a narrative structure, making it similar to the Campaign. In this mode, you control Kastor, the son of Arkantos, the main character of the Campaign. Kastor, in collaboration with Gaia, aims to stop Kronos.
What makes Kastor special and sets him apart from other hero units is that
he never truly dies.
Instead of dying, Kastor falls wounded and remains on the ground for a while before you can control him again.
In this mode, you will encounter various levels, the first four of which are Tutorials designed to help you learn the game mechanics. In later stages, there are levels that are interconnected. You can recognize these by the lines linking the circular level icons.
Such levels are labeled as A and B, but you are not required to choose only one. If you play Level A, you can still play Level B afterward. In the early stages, the Gaia AI acts as your ally, but in most of the later levels, you will be on your own, facing one or more enemies.
Additionally, after selecting a level, you can use the ‘Invite Player’ button to invite a friend and play Arena of Gods together. Each level also features three difficulty settings: Standard, Hard, and Extreme.
In Arena of Gods, you do not choose a major god. Instead, you play with the god assigned to you. In most of the early levels, you play with Gaia, but in later stages, you will play with different gods.
Map Features
Unlike normal matches, the maps in Arena of Gods feature unique elements, such as frozen units scattered across various locations. These frozen units can be unlocked by your Legend, Kastor. To do this, simply move Kastor next to them.
However, you cannot immediately add these units to your army, as there are certain requirements to fulfill—such as advancing to the third age, razing ten enemy buildings, or accumulating 1,000 gold.
Additionally, when you meet the requirements to free frozen units, you will receive an on-screen notification, and their locations will be pinged on the map.
What Are World Twisters?
World Twists are special events unique to Arena of Gods. These events affect you, your allies, and your enemies. Each level has one World Twister, and adapting your playstyle to these events can provide significant advantages. Otherwise, ignoring them could put you at a disadvantage.
For example, the World Twist called ‘Freyja’s Second Ride’ spawns infantry units after cavalry units die but increases the cost of cavalry. Before starting a level, you can view the World Twisters in the top-left and top-right corners of the screen. Additionally, the World Twist, ‘Gaia’s Remnants of Atlantis’ is present in every level and allows Kastor to free frozen units.
Blessings, Explained
After completing a level, you earn one or more Blessings as rewards. While most Blessings are passive abilities, some are active powers that must be manually activated. You can view the Blessing reward for a level in the middle-top part of the screen. Once you choose a level, you can assign up to three Blessings to Kastor.
Selecting Blessings based on the World Twisters and your Major God will be beneficial.
Blessings come in the following types:
- Simple: Grants a passive ability.
- Fine: Enhances a passive ability with the same name.
- Heroic: Further enhances a Fine-tier passive ability with the same name.
- Eternal: These abilities do not have any upgrades. Some are active rather than passive and must be used manually.
