Superman Trailer Needs More Work, Says James Gunn

Superman Trailer Needs More Work, Says James Gunn

Key Takeaways

  • Executives were rumored to be nervous about the Superman trailer, seeking recuts.
  • James Gunn addresses rumors and reveals he’s the only ‘studio’ behind the trailer.
  • He added that there is a process that means specific, demands for a recut.

While Superman fans wait for the first trailer to see what James Gunn has up his sleeve, it appears there are some rather strong rumors floating around the internet. The latest rumor about the upcoming Superman trailer is that the cut executives saw made them quite nervous and that there were even some requests that Gunn recut it. Once that rumor leaked out it made its way around the internet quite quickly and even eventually made their way to the DCU chief himself.

At least part of the reason for the rumors that execs aren’t in love with the Superman trailer is that it’s been so long since it feels like people started asking to see it. There’s also been quite a bit of talk that the video is going to either hit the internet or movie theaters during the Christmas season. Gunn’s talk about how he was done with the trailer has likely fueled some of the talk that the cut is out there and that perhaps the reason it hasn’t been released yet is because there was something the people in charge of releasing it didn’t like.

The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are ‘mostly’ canon to the DCU reboot, and James Gunn offered a new explanation for how this works.

James Gunn Shoots Down ‘Worries’ Rumors

However, earlier this week, Gunn was specifically asked about those rumors and whether or not he was asked to recut the trailer because studio executives didn’t like what they saw. In typical Gunn fashion, he responded on social media and shut those rumors down as best he could. He first explained on Threads that the execs in question were only him. He was in charge of when and how the trailer was released and what it would look like when people got their first look at the new Superman movie.

“Well sort of. But when he says ‘studio’ that’s solely me, as the only studio involved in cutting or anything to do with the trailer is DC Studios i.e. me & Peter”

The Peter, Gunn mentions is Peter Safran, who has formed a partnership with Gunn in order to head up DC and their foray into the new DCU. Gunn then pointed out that he is the creatively demanding one and that if someone were to be demanding changes to the Superman trailer, he would be demanding them himself. He then went on to clarify that the process of making sure that the cut is perfect for its fans is the same one he went through when he was cutting every Guardians of the Galaxy trailer. He added that process includes “pushing the marketing folks as hard as I can, cutting & recutting until I think we have something worthy of the film itself. All that said, my notes are a lot more specific than make it better.”

Finally, Gunn said that while he might go through a process that recuts the Superman trailer over and over, his notes are far more specific than “make it better.” What the DCU chief didn’t say is when exactly fans would get their first look at the Man of Steel for the next generation.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
