Epic Games’ massively successful third-person shooter Fortnite was once a simple zombie survival game but, in the years following its 2017 release, it evolved into something far grander. These days, Fortnite is not just a video game; it’s a platform. There are multiple different modes in the hit shooter, many of which are distinct and fleshed-out enough to be classified as their own standalone experiences. Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival, for example, are all basically games within a game. Like most live service titles, Fortnite demands a lot from players, but those that have the time (and money) to invest in it will find hundreds upon hundreds of hours of content to enjoy.




In addition to releasing new modes, Epic Games hosts events, collaborations, and concerts within Fortnite on a regular basis. Throughout the course of its existence, the game has had crossovers with almost every pop culture franchise one can think of, from God of War, Tron, and Street Fighter to Transformers, The Walking Dead, and Tenet. Unlike other crossover-heavy games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Epic Games has been far more lenient with the types of collabs it allows in Fortnite, to the point that practically nothing feels out of place. With this in mind, it’s about time that Fortnite collaborates with the legendary game developer Hideo Kojima.

Epic Games Should Add Hideo Kojima to Fortnite


Hideo Kojima is One of the Most Famous Developers in the Gaming Industry

Compared to the fields of film and music, the gaming industry doesn’t have a lot of celebrities. Many gamers aren’t familiar with the people behind the games they know and love. There are, however, a few developers that have managed to achieve worldwide recognition, such as Hideo Kojima. Best known for his work on the Metal Gear series, Kojima is a pioneer of cinematic storytelling in gaming. In a time when video games often had rudimentary narratives, his early works, like the 1987 stealth game Metal Gear and the 1988 visual novel Snatcher, were unexpectedly mature in terms of plot and tone.

Kojima is arguably one of the most consistent developers in the gaming industry. Despite some of his works being a tad too experimental for some, almost every game he’s produced has received critical acclaim. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, for instance, has widely been praised for its genre-defining stealth gameplay and heavy political themes. Meanwhile, the former PlayStation exclusive Death Stranding has garnered positive reviews for its inventive use of asynchronous multiplayer and its bizarre, off-the-wall story. Even some of Kojima’s lesser-known titles, such as Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hands and Policenauts, have their fair share of fans.


A Hideo Kojima Skin in Fortnite Sounds Absurd, But There is Precedent

With how much of an icon Hideo Kojima is in the gaming industry, him having a collaboration with Fortnite would make sense. Some may think that, since he’s a real person and not a fictional video game character, such a crossover will not be feasible, but that isn’t the case. Fortnite has collaborated with multiple real-life celebrities over the last few years. Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, John Cena, and even Naomi Osaka have received skins in the game. Taking this into account, the prospect of a Hideo Kojima skin in Fortnite doesn’t sound that absurd.

If Hideo Kojima does make an appearance in Fortnite, it wouldn’t be the first time that his likeness is used in a game. The famed Japanese game designer has had cameos in several popular titles, including the mind-bending third-person shooter Control and the dystopian sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Fortnite‘s collaborations are already wild enough as it stands, but having players running around maps and gunning down enemies while wearing Hideo Kojima skins would make things even more chaotic, in a good way.
