According to Deadline, Nosferatu director Robert Eggers revealed some important factors that went into making the film, which included 5000 incontinent rats. Eggers said that he used trained rats to include in the background of some scenes in the movie but didn’t realize that having so many would be such a painstaking endeavor, as well as a very smelly one. He stated that when viewers see rats in the foreground that they are indeed real ones, but then used CGI to thin them out a bit.
However, Eggers went onto say that even though the rats were very well-trained, he didn’t know just how much they went to the bathroom everywhere and noted that the “smell was insane.” On the plus side of that really stinky revelation, it certainly does add an extra layer of realism for the time period and an authentic experience all around. It also goes to show that Robert Eggers is the ideal filmmaker to helm Nosferatu, due to his ability to capture historical elements so well, as shown in The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Eggers’ upcoming horror film is one of 2024s most anticipated horror movies and, for those who haven’t watched the original, due to its silent stance, Nosferatu aims to take a deeper dive into its story in a bid to offer the old classic in a different way, as the new film is set even earlier than Bram Stoker’s writings. Even though it might not be everyone’s idea of a stereotypical Christmas movie, Nosferatu will arrive in theaters on December 25.
