Mortal Kombat was one of quite a few major fighters to come out last year, but compared to its biggest competitors it has had the most lukewarm reception. It hasn’t quite hit the same heights as the others. Out of MK, Street Fighter, and Tekken, its MK that is lagging. However, one leaker believes its poor performance might endanger future support. It looks like Mortal Kombat 1 DLC could even be canceled.
According to a leaker in a recent update, MK had extensive plans for DLC to expand the game. However, with the lackluster sales of its DLC so far (no doubt spurred on by the lower player base in general), could mean development on these expansions grinds to a halt. What’s going on with Mortal Kombat DLC being canceled and should fans be worried about the Mortal Kombat series’ future?
Mortal Kombat DLC Cancelled According to Leakers
In a recent Reddit post, a well-known Mortal Kombat leaker has claimed the future DLC is going to be canceled. While a few characters are still up in the air, they described much larger expansions. More story content along with other major expansions. However, it has apparently been canceled due to poor sales of previous expansions. While more DLC characters are still lined up, this might be less than previously planned too. Such as fewer guest characters to save money.
The big thing to keep in mind with a leak like this is that it’s not 100% confirmed yet. It is a leaker with a stronger track record. However, with these kinds of things, we can never rule out there being some miscommunication. However, poor sales and reception have been notable for Mortal Kombat 1.
Coming out around the same time as SF 6 and Tekken 8, it had big shoes to fill. Ultimately MK 1 hasn’t quite lived up to that. It’s had fewer features and bigger problems, failing to capture audiences in the same way. This gen, Mortal Kombat V Street Fighter hasn’t been as much of an argument. Mortal Kombat DLC canceled might be a reality of the game’s failure to capture a higher player count after launch.
It comes after a few waves of failures for Warner Bros Games. Their attempts at live service have gone disastrously, with Suicide Squad. Then there’s MultiVersus, which came back to high player numbers but is now nearly dead and caused a $100 million write-down recently. Mortal Kombat’s latest game proving less popular than anticipated is also a sign for concern.
