Infinity Nikki is Taking a Page Out of the Astro Bot Playbook

Key Takeaways

  • Infinity Nikki allows players to shrink down to tiny size to reach new areas.
  • The game offers a cozy open-world experience with expansive exploration, dress-up mechanics, and diverse gameplay elements.

Upcoming exploration adventure game Infinity Nikki will allow players to shrink the title character down to a tiny size to help her get around the world, much like one of the popular mechanics from Astro Bot. Infinity Nikki will give players a lot of different skills that they can equip by collecting Ability Outfits, and the newly revealed ability to shrink down to a tiny size is one of several that has already been revealed.

Infinity Nikki‘s release date has been confirmed for December 5 for PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile devices. While not a common name in much of the western world, Nikki has built up a big global following through her series of dress-up mobile games that first launched in 2012, and her upcoming open-world adventure game’s official website currently shows nearly 36 million preregistered players.

Infinity Nikki is aiming to be the coziest open-world game, and that appeal has already amassed a jaw-dropping number of players.

Members of the team at developer Papergames recently sat down for a pre-release Infinity Nikki livestream video session, which has been posted on the game’s official YouTube page. One of the biggest revelations from the hour-long session is the reveal of a new ability outfit called Starlet Burst, which allows Nikki to shrink down to a fraction of her normal size and hop atop the head of her bipedal catlike companion, Momo, to access some areas that would be impossible to reach otherwise. Aesthetically, the newly revealed ability outfit features Nikki in a white blouse and tights covered by a pair of powder blue bloomers, which also match her pigtailed hair when she’s making use of Starlet Burst’s powers.

Infinity Nikki Shows Off New Ability Outfit

While Nikki’s new ability is similar to the effect granted by the mouse power-up in Astro Bot, it also opens up a lot of new gameplay possibilities, as Momo can take advantage of certain features that Nikki can’t, like climbing special ropes and shooting himself out of a confetti cannon. Momo doesn’t seem as versed in combat as Nikki, though, so players will have to look out for dangers like the Pounceria plant, which can gobble him up temporarily. Although Infinity Nikki‘s development is being led by former Zelda series director Kentaro Tominaga, the game will focus more on exploration than combat, but enemies will still be present.

Additionally, the video clips from the livestream only show Momo running from Esselings and not engaging in combat with them. This contrasts with the title character, as previous looks at Infinity Nikki‘s Ability Outfits have showcased the title character using an all-white outfit’s Power of Whim to fire green magical bolts of energy at her enemies.
