Key Takeaways
- God of War’s Atreus has been a bit of a marmite character since he was introduced.
- His actor, Sunny Suljic, is well-aware of the feedback and even took it on board for Ragnarok.
- Suljic admitted as much during a panel at MCM Comic Con Birmingham, where he revealed that he made a Twitch alt to see how streamers reacted to him.
While speaking during a God of War panel at MCM Comic Con Birmingham, Atreus actor Sunny Suljic admitted that he changed the character’s portrayal in Ragnarok after secretly watching Twitch streams and getting negative feedback.
Although Sony Santa Monica’s attempts to finally make Kratos a likeable character in the Norse God of War games were largely a massive success, it’s fair to say that his son, Atreus, didn’t get the same near-universal love. In 2018’s God of War, Atreus was considered annoying by a lot of fans, despite that clearly being the point to some degree.

BioWare’s latest epic isn’t the sprawling RPG I expected it to be.
Ignoring the overwhelming amount of puzzle hints that every side character suffers from giving, Atreus was generally considered to be much less annoying in God of War Ragnarok. You might think that’s just because his character has grown up in the years between games, but it’s actually partly due to his actor, Sunny Suljic.
Sunny Suljic Made Atreus Less Of A “Brat” After Fan Feedback
During a God of War panel at MCM Comic Con Birmingham, Sunny Suljic opened up about his time as Atreus across God of War and God of War Ragnarok. Suljic has previously been rather open about the feedback his character has received, something he doubled down on when revealing that he tweaked his performance based on feedback from Twitch streamers.
Suljic revealed that he made a fake account on Twitch and would watch streamers play 2018’s God of War. While watching, he’d use his alias to ask the chat what they thought of “the kid in God of War”, which led to a lot of comments saying that he was a “brat”. In response to that feedback, Suljic changed how he played Atreus for God of War Ragnarok.
I took a lot of Criticism because I made a fake on Twitch, and I would watch other streamers play (God of War). I would have an alias and ask: ‘So, uh, what do you think about the kid in God of War?’ And they would be like: ‘Oh he’s such a brat.’ So I transitioned my character a bit. – Sunny Suljic
Although there are surely always going to be some fans that consider Atreus to be a distraction from Kratos, Suljic’s efforts to make Loki more likeable were undoubtedly successful in Ragnarok, where he plays an even bigger role. Here’s hoping he gets to do even more with the character, and potentially gets his own story to tell.
