Ghost of Yotei promises a completely different story than its beloved predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima. From a new protagonist with Atsu to a completely different era and location, Ghost of Yotei is primed to be a bold and exciting leap forward for developer Sucker Punch. With a time jump of 300 years, Ghost of Yotei is teasing an offering of different weapons compared to Ghost of Tsushima.
One of the most exciting reveals in Ghost of Yotei‘s announcement trailer is the confirmation of matchlock guns. The prospect of using firearms in tandem with blades is thrilling, but that isn’t the only major combat change. It has also been revealed that Atsu will be able to dual-wield swords, which was a feature that many Ghost of Tsushima players longed for. While some may have wanted to dual-wield as Jin Sakai, Atsu is shaping up to be a fascinating character who contrasts Jin in a variety of compelling ways. This is a big enough difference on its own, but it also implies a change in how Ghost of Yotei utilizes stealth mechanics.

Though it wouldn’t happen any time soon, a Sucker Punch game melding the strengths of both Infamous and the Ghost series could be a slam dunk.

Atsu Seems More Aggressive Than Jin
So far, much of Ghost of Yotei remains hidden in the shadows, but it has been confirmed that Atsu’s journey is fueled more by revenge and anger than honor and protecting the people of Tsushima from the invading Mongols. It’s unclear how Ghost of Yotei and Ghost of Tsushima will be connected, if at all, but the differences are blatant. Atsu’s more aggressive nature will likely be brought to even greater heights with the help of two swords at one’s disposal. However, with two katanas available to use, it raises questions about whether Atsu will also have a tanto in her arsenal or not.
Because of the drastic timeline change, it’s possible that Ghost of Yotei could still have more weapons to reveal. As of now, though, it looks like Atsu does not have a tanto. In Ghost of Tsushima, Jin uses the small dagger for stealth kills, and if it is missing from Atsu’s arsenal, then this has huge gameplay implications. Either this means Ghost of Yotei may not prioritize stealth, or it will approach stealth in an undisclosed way that differs from Ghost of Tsushima. With so much stealth featured in the latter, it would be shocking if there is very little stealth involved in its successor.
Ghost of Yotei
is set in the year 1603, the beginning of the Edo period.
Atsu’s Confirmed Weapons So Far
- Katanas
- Kusarigama
- Matchlock guns
Her small arsenal doesn’t really imply stealth-based combat. The addition of a kusarigama is another exciting development, and while it is a close to mid-range weapon, it may not be the most effective way of killing someone stealthily. Of course, Atsu could be far less concerned about stealth than Jin, since she is on a path of vengeance. The kusarigama could simply be a necessity, as she possibly knows she will have to deal with instances of sneak attacks. However, doing so with a kusarigama would be a wild choice.
Ghost of Yotei Promises a Thoughtful Departure From Its Predecessor
Before Ghost of Yotei was officially announced, many theories about the sequel expected it to revolve around the second Mongol invasion. Instead, Sucker Punch completely subverted expectations, and it could be risky enough of a change to bring something stellar to life.
The Edo period was defined by a strict social structure, implying Atsu is shaking things up.
It sometimes feels rare for developers to take such bold leaps into different territory, and that’s what makes Ghost of Yotei so exciting. From early footage, it seems like a fresh and unique story that still holds true to the basics of its predecessor. As more information is revealed, it will be fascinating to see how Ghost of Yotei approaches stealth.
