Key Takeaways
- PS5 Pro users have reportedly been facing image quality issues in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora exhibits shimmering artifacts on PS5 Pro, leading to worse image quality than the base PS5 version of the game.
- The issue is most likely due to a botched implementation of the PS5 Pro’s PSSR upscaler for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
PlayStation 5 Pro users are reporting serious image quality issues in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The Ubisoft open-world title was recently updated with PS5 Pro support, but Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora unfortunately joins the list of lackluster implementations for the upgraded mid-generation console.
Developed by Ubisoft Massive, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was released in December 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Since the open-world action-adventure game only targeted current-gen systems, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora garnered heaps of praise for its cutting-edge visuals, particularly its lush jungle environments, superb material quality, ray tracing features, volumetric lighting, and more. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora took advantage of the PS5’s feature set as well, even offering a 60fps performance mode for added smoothness.

Check out the trailer for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s second story pack, Secrets of the Spires.
As the game’s one-year anniversary inches closer, Ubisoft Massive recently issued Title Update 1.2 for Avatars: Frontiers of Pandora alongside its Secret of the Spires story pack. This update added PS5 Pro support for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, offering a 60fps framerate at the base PS5’s Quality Mode settings while utilizing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. However, the AI upscaler’s implementation has seemingly gone awry, as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora exhibits worse image quality on PS5 Pro compared to the base PS5.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Fans are Frustrated With Shimmering on PS5 Pro
Some Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora players who tried the game on PS5 Pro took to ResetEra to complain about the “horrendous” image quality, particularly the abundant shimmering on screen that typically results from flubbed resolution upscaling. YouTuber GamingTech further investigated Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘s PSSR woes in a recent video and concurred with the criticism. The shimmering artifacts are most noticeable around foliage, a significant issue considering Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘s environments are full of trees and plants. What makes matters worse is that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora only offers one mode on PS5 Pro with no option to disable PSSR, leaving players stuck with the subpar image quality.
Fans have been attempting to alert Ubisoft Massive about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘s image quality issues on PS5 Pro, but the studio has yet to acknowledge them. Interestingly, the PS5 Pro versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the Silent Hill 2 remake faced similar PSSR-related graphical bugs as well. Bloober Team has since fixed the remake’s issues, and EA is actively investigating Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s PS5 Pro troubles. Hopefully, Ubisoft Massive is cognizant of the same and is working on rectifying the problems PS5 Pro users are facing with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
