Dragon Age Fans Wanted Varric To Be A Romance Option

Dragon Age Fans Wanted Varric To Be A Romance Option

Key Takeaways

  • A poll of the Dragon Age fandom has found that many of us would have considered romancing Varric if he was an option.
  • 39 percent of respondents would do it with no questions asked. 28 percent would as well, if they liked the romance arc.
  • Despite appearing in three Dragon Age games, the fan-favourite dwarf has never been a romance option.

Oh, Varric. He’s been a ride-or-die for three different Dragon Age player characters now, although nothing will compare with the bond he had with Hawke in Dragon Age 2. Alas, despite how close they were, it never went beyond friendship.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it turns out that many of us would have loved to hook up with the guy. In a poll of the Dragon Age fandom run by the Tumblr blog rpgchoices, many respondents indicated that they would have romanced him if the game let them, or would have at least considered it.

Most Dragon Age Fans Would Have Considered Romancing Varric, According To Poll

According to the results, 39 percent of respondents would absolutely romance him, no questions asked. A further 28 percent would consider it, depending on what the romance would have been like, leaving just 33 percent of players ruling it out entirely.

We do know that Varric was almost a romance option in Dragon Age: Inquisition, his second appearance as a companion, but this was ruled out by the writers. Former lead writer David Gaider felt that it would “destroy” his character”, arguing that making someone romanceable “limits the type of character they can be”.

In Dragon Age 2, you can flirt with Varric, but it just stays playful. It’s been said that there was a scrapped scene at the game of the game that would have suggested that Varric and Hawke were actually together the whole time, but this obviously never saw the light of day.

He recently appeared in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but once again, you can’t get with him. You can get with every single companion thought, so at least there’s that. This includes Lace Harding, finally giving us at least one romanceable dwarf in the series.
