In addition to the plethora of weapons and tools at their disposal, players also have a choice from 38 character variants of the protagonist, each with their strengths, weaknesses, and unique abilities. With a wide selection of personas to suit a variety of play strategies, which ones offer players the best chance of victory?

Updated November 30, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: Generally speaking, the best Brotato character is the Well-Rounded character, which comes with a large Weapon selection, good (but basic) base stat bonuses, and is considered to be the easiest character to learn and do well with. But the real meat of the game, the extreme bonuses and drawbacks given to some characters, makes for some absolutely insane builds in Brotato. This guide to the best characters Brotato players can choose has been updated to provide at-a-glance information on each character’s base bonuses, drawbacks, and which starting weapons are available to that character at the start of a round.

10 Well-Rounded

Starting Weapons

  • Cacti Club, Double Barrel Shotgun, Fist, Ghost Flint, Icicle, Lute, Wrench, Knife, Stick, Pistol, Slingshot, SMG, Taser, Wand

While the Well-Rounded Brotato may not flex significant statistical boosts, he is an excellent introduction to the game and a way for players to determine their preferred strategic style. Whether it be a gun-heavy assault or several swinging swords at once, Well-Rounded will introduce players to the variety of weapons and items at their disposal to help pick their poison.

Well-Rounded grants players a head start on their run, courtesy of a 5% increase in speed, +5 in HP points, and +8 in harvesting. While these boosts aren’t as significant as the other characters available, this opens a realm of possibilities for players to build the character’s strengths how they see fit.

9 Speedy

The Speedy character for Blobfish's Brotato

Players looking to utilize Speedy’s skills will not be surprised about the character’s strengths, the name says it all. This variant starts its run with 30% higher speed, which is complemented by a +1 increase in melee damage for every 2% speed the player has.

It is worth noting that Speedy struggles when he is not moving, evident in -100 active armor stat when the player is standing still. However, this should not pose a significant problem as Speedy’s strengths support a style of running-and-slashing, so he is best used on the move.

How To Unlock Demon In Brotato

Speedy can be unlocked by reaching a +50% speed total on any run.

However, this character receives 50% fewer materials and is punished for how much he accumulates, losing 1% damage and speed for every 15 and 30 materials in possession respectively.

  • HP Regeneration modifications are increased by 100%
  • +5 Harvesting
  • -100% Attack Speed
  • Armor modifications are reduced by 50%

Starting Weapons

While the Doctor variant may not pack the biggest punch among the characters in Brotato, he is one of the hardest to keep down. This is due to his boost in HP regeneration, which is given a head start of +5 to begin the run and is doubled as the game progresses.

Doctor does have a deficiency in attack speed (-100%) and armor modifications (-50%), however, using Medical-type weapons will grant the player an additional boost of 200% attack speed. By equipping medical weapons, the attack speed deficit is flipped to an advantage and attacks can be delivered at a significantly higher frequency.

Doctor is an unlockable character that can be accessed by healing 200 HP in a single wave.

For the fans of relentlessly bashing bad guys at close range, the Gladiator character has been tailored especially for that purpose. To make matters more violent and efficient, players are granted a 20% boost in attack speed for each unique weapon they possess.

Gladiator starts with a deficit in attack speed (-40%) and luck (-30%), however, the boosts earned from weapon variety counteract much of this. With a focus on increasing stats such as dodge and armor, the Gladiator is a formidable foe for Brotato‘s adversaries.

5 Cyborg

Where the likes of Speedy and Streamer thrive while moving around the map, Soldier does the complete opposite. In fact, the Soldier character cannot launch any attacks while on the move. While this may seem to pose a significant challenge to win a run with him, the benefits of remaining stationary with this variant justify it.

Soldier has an active boost of +50% damage and +50% attack speed while motionless, which is coupled with a +15 knockback score to help fend off incoming enemies. He also has a +200% pickup range, meaning players will not have to venture far to pick up dropped materials.

The Masochist receives a 5% damage boost each time he is hit (this resets each round) and starts the run with a +20 HP regeneration boost. To complement this, players start their Masochist run with +10 HP and +8 armor boosts to give them a fighting chance in the early rounds.

For players that are having difficulty overcoming the final boss or the more heavily-fortified aliens of the later waves, Jack may be the solution to the problem. Boasting a more potent offense against the toughest bad guys, Jack is the most effective against boss types.

Players using Jack will have 75% fewer enemies, a 50% damage boost against elite and boss-type enemies, and receive 200% more materials, making it easier to upgrade weaponry. While these are excellent perks, it is worth noting that enemy health gets a 250% boost, and they deliver 50% more damage.

The toughest character to unlock has arguably one of the most useful perks for a successful run. With the Demon variant, +50% of collected materials are converted into Max HP, with 1 HP being given for every 13 materials collected.

While the downside of this character is having to use Max HP for currency to purchase items in the shop, unlocking the Demon also makes available the Obliterator, which is one of the most devastating weapons in the game.

How To Unlock Demon In Brotato

To get access to the Demon, players need to complete a run on Danger Level 5.
