The Terraria 1.4.5 update is delayed into 2025 to make it feel “just right”

The Terraria 1.4.5 update is now set for 2025, as developer Re-Logic confirms it wants to ensure that the major overhaul feels “just right” before sending it out into the world. The announcement comes as part of a new Terraria State of the Game for November, meaning that while we won’t be able to play the next patch this year, we do get some rather juicy spoilers for one of the best PC games ever. On the cards this week are some fantastic new features to help you grow trees to never-before-seen heights.

“The work on the final lists from each dev team member is nearing its conclusion, which is a great measure of progress,” Re-Logic head of business strategy Ted ‘Loki’ Murphy writes in the new update. “That said, we are pretty certain that there is no way that we will see Terraria 1.4.5 release this year.” The patch, which is touted as the final, final (final) update for one of the best sandbox games, has gradually grown from a tiny series of fixes and tweaks into a colossal overhaul in true Re-Logic style.

“End-of-year releases (especially if you are trying to sync launch across PC, mobile, and console globally at the same time) are fraught with peril due to review cycles and people leaving early for the holidays,” Murphy explains. “The hope was that we would be able to get things in ahead of that end-of-year mess, but that isn’t looking to be the case. We are also not going to force anyone on our team or anyone else’s team to crunch for what would be an arbitrary deadline. So, that said, the next Terraria update is moving along into 2025.

“We are sure that will not be welcome news for many, but we remain committed to being a quality-first studio, so we will take the time necessary for each update to feel ‘just right,’” Murphy continues. “We think that once the update is out, everyone will appreciate that time and care. Apologies for this one taking so long for sure, but it will be well worth it.” It’s an approach Re-Logic has always stood by, and the quality of its releases shows – I’ll always happily wait until everything is fully ready.

With that news out of the way, Murphy touches on the upcoming Palworld x Terraria crossover coming in 2025, and gives us some 1.4.5 teasers. This month, we get to see a new, vastly more convenient way to plant acorns by firing them from a distance, rather than having to plant them manually. Terraria creator Andrew ‘Redigit’ Spinks confirms that this is done using a new slingshot, but that the animation isn’t currently ready for it. Either way, it should make one of the most awkward bits of busywork a lot simpler and more fun.

We also get a look at a new Infused Fertilizer. Using this on trees makes them instantly grow to a much greater height than usual, allowing you to create the kind of tall forests that usually only appear during the initial Terraria map generation process. That’s handy if you’re looking for a particularly dramatic aesthetic, but it should also help you get more wood out of each tree. We don’t get to see how to craft it yet, though. “Sorry, that’s a trade secret,” Re-Logic teases.

Re-Logic will release the Terraria 1.4.5 update in 2025. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we have a confirmed date for the patch, but in the meantime you can catch up on the latest community goings-on courtesy of the full State of the Game post via the forums.
