Open-world ZZZ rival Project Mugen is now Ananta, a stylish urban anime RPG

More than a year since it was initially unveiled as ‘Project Mugen,’ the open-world anime RPG from NetEase Games now has an official name – Ananta. With full freedom of movement reminiscent of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, and a vast city to explore, it’s been on our calendars for quite some time. In a new teaser trailer confirming its official name, the Once Human and Marvel Rivals publisher reveals that even more information on the challenger to HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero is coming very soon.

I absolutely adore Zenless Zone Zero’s combat and sense of style, but it makes one dramatic departure from Genshin Impact by opting for standalone stages rather than a full open world. If that particular aspect left you a little disappointed, Ananta looks to be the perfect solution – blending all the style and charm of ZZZ with a sprawling high-rise city set to challenge the best open-world games.

The anime RPG is led by an investigator on the hunt to fight chaos, and gives you the ability to dive and swing across the city in full Spider-Man fashion. Ananta also includes wall running, swimming, driving, and riding options as part of what developer Naked Rain calls the “3C system.” You can quickly switch between movement modes on the fly to get around at pace, and can walk into many indoor locations around the New York-style Nova City without any break for loading.

It’s certainly looking very promising – the traversal looks like an absolute blast, and the combat teased in previous trailers promises to be even better. The good news is that we shouldn’t be waiting long for more details. A countdown on the Ananta website suggests that we’ll have more details around five and a half days from the time of writing – expect the next announcement to fall around Thursday December 5, then.

For the time being, here are the best anime games in 2024, as well as the best parkour games if you fancy dashing across the world in style.
