Helldivers 2 Has Won Another Game of the Year Award

Key Takeaways

  • Helldivers 2 won Game of the Year at the TIGA Awards, following a similar Golden Joystick Awards win.
  • The game achieved high player counts, impressive sales, and a positive reception from fans.
  • Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony’s efforts in responding to player feedback attributed to Helldivers 2’s success.

Helldivers 2 has been named Game of the Year, this time by a UK-based game industry body, TIGA. It previously won an equivalent award recognition earlier this month at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards, the event that kicked off an award-winning spree for Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios.

One of the biggest surprise hits for publisher Sony, Helldivers 2 burst onto the scene in February and evoked a strongly positive response from fans and critics alike. In just 10 days of its arrival, the online co-op game’s concurrent player count on Steam catapulted to over 330,000, beating live-service rival Destiny 2 and other popular titles in this particular statistic. On the sales front too, Helldivers 2 did impressively well at launch and sold a million copies across PC and PS5 in just three days. Owing to such an emphatic performance, the third-person shooter game has been in discussion for various different awards in 2024.

At the 2024 TIGA Games Industry Awards, Helldivers 2 won the Game of the Year award, just days after earning a similar distinction. The latest win comes right after the best-selling Sony game bagged the Console Game of the Year award at this year’s Golden Joystick Awards, alongside other recognitions, namely Best Multiplayer Game, Critics’ Choice Award, and Best Game Trailer. Besides winning Game of the Year, Helldivers 2 also came out on top in the Visual Design and Technical Innovation categories at the TIGA event. While these two categories were decided by TIGA members, the Game of the Year was voted for by the attendees of the award show.

Helldivers 2 Picks Another Game of the Year Award, Continues Solid Run

Undoubtedly, the back-to-back award sweeps at two different events further add to what has been a very memorable year for Arrowhead Game Studios. However, a good chunk of Helldivers 2‘s immense popularity also has to do with the Swedish developer, together with Sony, actively responding to player feedback. Back in May, the console giant reversed its poorly received PSN account requirement for the live-service game, respecting fans’ demands and gaining their trust again.

Similarly, when a significant number of Helldivers 2 players addressed their grievances about the Escalation of Freedom update, the devs came up with a “60-day plan” to fix various reported issues. Consistent prompt response to community feedback has seen the sci-fi game hit engagement peaks on Steam time and again. Thanks to its popularity among fans, there are also talks of Sony launching a Helldivers 2-themed PS5 controller in the future.
