Games That Would Make Great Podcasts

Ranging all the way from humble beginnings in Pallet Town to post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, we have seen many video games transformed into the world of TV and film. We’ve also had heart-wrenching cinematic moments from adventurers like Pikachu and Ash to survivors like Ellie and Joel.

While many of these video games transform well into movies and shows, many adaptations have a harder time. In a much less traversed field, the field of podcasting, many video games would do really well. There are a lot of podcasts devoted to discussing video games, but very few take a true remake approach where the listener can relive an entire story, or perhaps hear it in a whole new way. There is a lot to explore here, and these games are a perfect start.

9 BioShock

“Would you kindly” tune into next week’s episode? BioShock has all the makings to be a great podcast. Its story line and setting would bring fans back through a beloved classic, and a brand-new audience would easily relate.

Being transported underwater would give listeners a whole new world where they could feel and hear this game in a new way. Whether it is hearing Andrew Ryan’s utopian-seeking ideas or the footsteps of an approaching Big Daddy, this podcast iteration would have you lost in a deep water thriller for many episodes.

8 Pikmin

Imagine that you are flying to another country, but fall asleep and wake up on an island all alone. Behind you there is an idea of what a plane should look like, but no one is around, and you have no idea where you are. This scenario would just be episode one in a long list of continuing episodes.

Every episode could end with a successful part retrieval, and every boss faced could be voiced by a different actor. This podcast could completely change the narrative that this medium is supposed to be verbal dialogue between people. It could be structured in a narrator style, or it could take a more experimental approach and give Louie a new voice. If Pikmin became a podcast, it would be a fun listen for people of all different ages and video game backgrounds.

7 The Last Of Us

Already an award-winning television show, The Last Of Us is regarded by many to be one of the greatest stories ever created in the video game world. It takes you through a beautiful, desperate world, where characters need each other in order to survive.

Whether you are into the story, the characters, or you want the eerie thrill and suspense from the sound of the Clickers, The Last of Us would be a great podcast for people who are already a fan of the show and who appreciate a post-apocalyptic plot.

6 Paper Mario

Imagine that you’re walking along one day minding your own business, contemplating the existence of newspapers in a digital world, and suddenly you realize that you have been turned into paper. This podcast would be a new and inventive one, where the main character has to deal with a world they never knew because it never existed.

How does someone react to their entire world becoming as frail as a piece of paper? How would it sound to hear someone go through the pit of 100 trials? Paper Mario would be a different style of podcast given its RPG nature, and the game would take on a whole new dynamic with spoken dialogue.

5 Kingdom Hearts

Another RPG, but this one would be full of classic characters many of you know and love. All the original main characters would be there, and among the Disney and Pixar characters, summons, and other party members, this podcast would have a large, exciting cast.

Kingdom Hearts also thinks about the power of friendship, and how loss can push us to act. You could follow Sora’s worldly journey as he battles bosses, tries to fight off the Heartless, and attempts to regroup with his friends.

4 Dance Dance Revolution

How much fun would it be if an entire podcast was based on timing, rhythm, and dancing? The podcast could take many shapes or grooves, but one thing would be for certain – it would be unique. You could be at the gym, or spending your day off in the park, all the while listening to Dance Dance Revolution teaching you how to hit the perfect move.

Instead of modeling visual dance tutorial videos, this would be an audio-only version of the game, where you would have a chance to compete with your friends. As opposed to asking your friend if they watched the latest TikTok dance, you could say, “Hey, did you figure out that combination in the latest DDR episode?”

The podcast could be structured as tutorial conversations or guided dance steps, but whatever direction it moved in, it would be a great time for anyone and a fun way to exercise.

3 Fortnite

Any battle royale or last man standing game would do for this podcast idea, which would put you at the center of this experience. The episode could start, and all of a sudden you are flying over a map, on your way to an epic, almost Hunger Games type of experience where you get to listen to what it would sound and feel like to be surrounded by 99 other people all searching for power ups and resources as an impending storm approaches.

The podcast could take an additional leap by giving characters voices as well. With how great of a job Fortnite does with allowing you to play as an array of different characters, this experience would allow you to hear new dialogue and situations that the game alone doesn’t provide.

2 Zelda

This could be a focus on one game or the series at large, but getting to hear one or all of the Legend of Zelda games would be a great addition to your downloads.

You would be able to listen to the iconic music, boss fights, and of course, the immutable sound of Navi saying “Hey Listen!” From Toon Link to Ganondorf, this podcast would be an awesome opportunity for actors to highlight many of these characters and moments, and through this medium, the sound effects would shine.

1 Pokemon

What does it take to be the very best, like no one ever was? Is it truly possible to catch ’em all?

Forget the CGI, this podcast would also give actors a chance to really sink their voices into so many different roles. You would hear the classic characters in Ash, Misty, Brock, Team Rocket, etc. And all of the Pokemon would get a chance to be revisited in a modern landscape.

Pokemon remains popular in today’s world because of its replay value, but also because of its commitment to story and characters. If Pokemon became a live-action podcast, it just may be the very best.
