Despite only appearing in five episodes of the original Dexter series, Camilla Figg was a key character because she was someone who knew Dexter Morgan ever since he was a child. Camilla was a close friend of Dexter’s father, Harry, and her appearance in Dexter: Original Sin is essential, as she could provide some key details about Dexter’s past. Even though Camilla didn’t know about Dexter’s dark passenger, it is clear that she was privy to a lot of information about his past. She had access to all the criminal case information as Miami Metro’s trusted file clerk, and she was a key part in assisting Harry with protecting his troubled son.
Camilla’s appearance in Dexter: Original Sin could fill in the blanks about what exactly she knew, and what she did to assist Harry. A lot of what happened in the original series will likely take on another meaning after viewing the prequel series. In an interview with Collider, Christian Slater teased that there is more to Harry Morgan than meets the eye, and that could link back to Camilla and what she knows about the past:
There’s things that Dexter doesn’t know that happened with Harry as a character, so those are the things that I’m really excited about and do give, I think, a greater insight into who this guy was.
In the pilot episode, Dexter visits Camilla brandishing donuts in exchange for a case file, and it’s clear she doesn’t really know what he’s up to, but her loyalty stems from her close relationship with his father. She even comments that Harry was a charmer just like him, so maybe there was something more between Camilla and Harry, and this could be revealed in Dexter: Original Sin. In many ways, it would be more satisfying if the relationship was just platonic, so it doesn’t cheapen her connection with Harry, or Dexter. Either way, she knows a lot about what went on back in the 90s, and possibly even further back, with flashbacks from the 70s era already confirmed to feature in Dexter: Original Sin.
What Happened To Camilla Figg In The Original Dexter Series?
During the third season of the original Dexter series, it is revealed that Camilla has terminal lung cancer, and doesn’t have long left. Dexter visits her in the hospital with flowers, and she tells him she’s been searching her whole life for the perfect key lime pie, and Dexter promises to find her the elusive food item before she dies. Dexter’s first attempt at delivering the ultimate key lime pie fails, but his final attempt hits the spot, and gives Camilla her ultimate peace. Dexter laces the pie with a sodium pentothal and breaks Harry’s code, to grant Camilla the dignified death she deserves. Before she dies, Dexter reveals that he killed his brother and one of Dexter’s best villains, The Ice Truck Killer, and she simply says ‘It’s good you did’ and passes away.
She couldn’t have asked a better person. Taking lives is what I do. But never an innocent person. And certainly not a friend.
Margo Martindale and Michael C. Hall play the emotional scenes so well, and despite only appearing in five episodes together, the bond between the characters is evident, and this is one of the reasons why Camilla is a potentially key character in Dexter: Original Sin. So much of Dexter’s backstory can be explored through this character and, even if she only appears in a handful of episodes, Camilla is a key part of Dexter lore.
