If Borderlands 4 features a multiverse as a part of its story, then there is one opportunity that cannot be passed up. After the teaser for Borderlands 4, there are a lot of possibilities for what could come next. The weapons, the Vault Hunters, and the story itself could see a drastic change depending on what comes next in the series. A multiverse is only one possible approach for the game, but it’s one that would hold a remarkable amount of potential. If that is the direction that Borderlands 4 takes, then there’s a natural advantage in the cards.
The teaser for Borderlands 4 showed a visually stunning scene, with a planet ripping through a barrier in space before a barrage of flaming masks impacts a second planet’s surface. There are a lot of questions raised by the commercial, many of which will have to wait until further information about the game comes out to be answered. So far, it has been revealed that Borderlands 4 will not take place on the familiar planet of Pandora, which will be a big shift no matter what. One possible explanation for this change is a possible trip into the multiverse for Borderlands 4.

Now that Borderlands is 15 years old, Borderlands 4 might want to consider either introducing new Vault Hunter archetypes or reworking what it has.
Borderlands 4 Could Use a Multiverse to Include Characters That Would Otherwise be Inaccessible
Borderlands Could Follow the Trend of Multiverses in Media
If there is a multiverse in the Borderlands series, then it could play a role in the upcoming game. Multiverses have become a trend, showing up in many forms of media. While they have appeared in comic book universes for decades, they have started to show up in films and video games as well. A prominent example would be Mortal Kombat 1, which takes place in a new universe compared to past games. It’s not out of the question to think that Borderlands 4 may feature a similar plotline. After all, a new universe could explain any big shifts the game may see.
A Multiverse Could Bring Back Departed Borderlands Heroes like Maya and Roland
The most obvious advantage of a multiverse would be for Borderlands 4 to bring back past characters. The death of Maya was one of the most controversial moments in Borderlands 3, killing off a well-liked character in a shocking fashion seemingly out of nowhere. A Borderlands 4 multiverse could give players a chance to see her again. Likewise, Roland is a major figure in Borderlands lore despite his death partway through the second game. Again, a multiverse provides the chance to get another glimpse of him. The chance to see beloved Borderlands characters again is a hard prospect to deny if the possibility presents itself.
Borderlands 4 Could See Another Universe’s Handsome Jack Appear
Of course, there is one more possibility invited by a potential Borderlands multiverse. If Handsome Jack returns in Borderlands 4, a multiverse may be the most likely way to make that happen. After all, Jack is far and away the most iconic villain in the franchise. Even if the next game introduces a new villain, bringing back Jack would surely draw attention from fans. Of course, whether or not Jack will return is only speculation at this point. However, since Jack has been dead for a while, a version of him from the multiverse is his best chance at returning in the next game.
There would definitely be risks if Borderlands 4 goes the multiverse route. Even so, if the story of Borderlands 4 has a clear opportunity to bring back some iconic characters, it would be an excellent option. There would be plenty of opportunities for great character moments, such as reuniting Maya with Ava or Roland with Tina. Even if it’s not the original versions, it could still provide a few interesting moments. If Borderlands 4 is about the multiverse, it shouldn’t forget to reintroduce some dearly departed Borderlands characters.
See if you have what it takes to go down in history as a legendary Vault Hunter as you search for secret alien treasure, blasting everything in sight.
