Marvel Snap Series Drop Controversy Explained

Marvel Snap Series Drop Controversy Explained

Marvel Snap features tons of characters from the Marvel Comics canon in its cards. From the franchise’s most iconic characters, like Iron Man and Captain America, to the most niche cameo characters, Marvel Snap has consistently made an effort to add interesting new characters to the game. Marvel Snap announced its first series drop since June to high anticipation, but fans have found this latest drop underwhelming to say the least, especially considering Marvel Snap’s system for card acquisition.

Marvel fans who have yet to play Marvel Snap would expect this controversy to involve lackluster character picks. Their instincts would be wrong, as the controversy specifically revolves around the game’s various card tiers rather than the characters themselves.

Marvel Snap’s Marvel Rivals Crossover Has the Potential to Be Game-Breaking

Marvel Snap has finally announced its long-awaited crossover with Marvel Rivals, and many of the upcoming new cards have huge game-breaking potential.

Series Drops are One of the Only Ways For Players to Obtain Previously High-Priced Cards

Like most games featuring gacha or collectible elements, Marvel Snap’s cards have a rarity system. This system features five tiers known as series, with Series One being the lowest and Series Five being the highest and most powerful.

To lower Marvel Snap’s barrier to entry, the game implements Series Drops over the course of the year. These Series Drops change the rarity of some of the game’s cards. Cards that are in Series Five will be moved to Series Four, and so forth.

Since cards in Series Three and up already cost a high number of tokens, one of the game’s currencies, making cards at these levels more accessible allows for players to build better decks at less of a cost. This makes Series Drops highly anticipated by players and tends to elicit a strong reaction from the Marvel Snap community.

Marvel Snap’s Latest Drop Outraged Players

Announced on November 25, the reveal of Marvel Snap’s latest Series Drop was no exception to the backlash these drops typically receive. This latest Series Drop will be added to Marvel Snap on December 10, marking the second Series Drop of the year. Previously, Marvel Snap would implement Series Drops multiple times over the course of the year. With a decrease in these drops, this latest announcement was already teed up for scrutiny.

In addition to being disappointed at the number of Series Drops this year, players took issue with which cards are included in this latest drop. Only three Series Four cards are dropped to Series Three and nine cards are dropped from Series Five to Series Four. Considering the price of these cards, players are in an uproar at the number of cards included in the drop.

Marvel Snap Fans Feel Card Prices are Way Too High

Replies to the announcement from Marvel Snap’s X (formerly Twitter) account feature screenshots of deals and special offers the game has promoted to its players. Examples include a Series 4 Miek card, 144 Miek Boosters, and two Spotlight Keys for $74.99 and a Series Four Jean Grey card, 310 Jean Grey Boosters, and 10,000 Collector’s Tokens, all for the low cost of $99.99. These prices are absolutely outrageous in the eyes of frustrated gamers and point to the expensive costs Marvel Snap players are facing if they want to build their collection.

To make matters worse, the cards in the Series Drop won’t change Marvel Snap’s current meta all that much. A handful of players consider some of these cards to hardly even be playable, let alone meta-defining. The three Series Four cards in the drop include Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde, and Snowguard, and the nine Series Five cards include Phastos, Grandmaster, Pixie, Beta Ray Bill, X-23, Supergiant, Sasquatch, Valentina, and Iron Lad.

The response from Marvel Snap players to this new Series Drop is unsurprising. If Second Dinner wants more gamers to play Marvel Snap, perhaps it should implement more Series Drops or introduce a new system to the game entirely. Though many find the Series Drop frustrating, those that are still interested can expect the drop in Marvel Snap’s next patch on December 10.
