Legacy Needs To Come Back

Key Takeaways

  • Michael Connelly plans to focus on Harry Bosch in his final book, justifying the continuation of Bosch: Legacy.
  • Bosch still has plenty of story left according to Connelly, so Bosch: Legacy needs to return to fulfill his vision.
  • Connelly believes in properly ending Bosch’s story on screen, referencing the potential for more source material.

The countdown is on for Bosch: Legacy‘s final season, which will hit screens in March 2025. Fans are looking forward to seeing Harry Bosch and the rest of the gang in ten more episodes, before the spin-off series, Ballard, takes center stage in the crime saga. However, fans won’t give up on more solo Harry Bosch stories, with the petition to Save Bosch: Legacy gathering pace in the lead up to the new series. Michael Connelly recently opened up about his plans for Harry Bosch during a recent book club event, and it’s clear the character has a lot of story left to go.

Michael Connelly introduced Renee Ballard into his crime book universe back in 2017, but she has mainly appeared as a co-lead with Harry Bosch. However, Connelly has revealed that Harry Bosch is very much the character he intends to focus on when he writes his final book in the series, and this feels like it justifies the continuation of Bosch: Legacy.

Michael Connelly’s Planned Final Book Will Put The Focus Back On Harry Bosch, Meaning The Continuation Of Bosch: Legacy Is Essential

Michael Connelly has been busy promoting his latest joint Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard book, The Waiting, in recent weeks. Connelly has been writing Harry Bosch stories for over 30 years now, and he ages the character in real time, meaning there will eventually be an end to his story. However, in an interview for his book club, Connelly revealed that he is contracted to four or five more books, meaning there is plenty of story left to tell with the character, and he also has big Harry Bosch-centric plans for his final swansong:

Hopefully the last book I write is Harry as lead character and not as a supporting character behind these two women.

The two women Connelly is referring to are Renee Ballard and Maddie Bosch, who have taken more central roles as the books have gone on, with Harry Bosch acting as a mentor to them. However, Connelly’s comments about his final book confirm that there is at least one solo Harry Bosch outing to go. This would suggest Bosch: Legacy surely needs to return at some point to fulfill Connelly’s vision, and end Bosch’s story in the right way. In the current book timeline, Bosch is 74 years old and still solving cases, but in the television series, he’s only in his early 60s, so there is clearly a lot more story left to tell. Unfortunately, Bosch: Legacy has been canceled, leaving Harry Bosch’s arc unfulfilled.

Michael Connelly has earned the right to end Harry Bosch’s story properly. He’ll get the opportunity to do that in his book series, but there is no logical reason why Titus Welliver’s iteration of the character shouldn’t also get the chance to get his story completed on screen. After ten years of build up, it would be a disservice to Harry Bosch to stop now. Of course, Bosch will appear in three episodes of Ballard season 1, but as Connelly said himself, he still has solo plans for the character in books he hasn’t even written yet. Bosch and Bosch: Legacy adapted two of Connelly’s books in each series, and there is plenty more source material to choose from to keep this show going for years to come.

The creative team behind Bosch: Legacy are not bound by the books and surely have other ideas to keep the show going. Bosch: Legacy has three co-leads: Harry Bosch, Honey Chandler and Maddie Bosch. Chandler’s role in the series is much bigger than the book iteration of her character, while Maddie’s role has been expanded in the books due to her progression in the series. Not to mention, Maurice ‘Mo’ Bassi and Reina Vasquez had their roles expanded in Bosch: Legacy season 2, and these arcs won’t be fulfilled in just one more season. Circling back to Harry Bosch, Connelly bases his characters on reality and clearly thinks the ex LAPD detective could be solving crimes long into his retirement:

As long as there are real people doing it, I think Harry can do it. He has that mindset and can extend himself through Renee and now Maddie. I look forward to Maddie and Renee not quite taking centerstage while he plays mentor.

Michael Connelly’s crime universe could feasibly be expanded into multiple shows, but as it stands, only Ballard is moving forward, with Bosch: Legacy canceled, and the Jerry Edgar spin-off axed. Of course, the Bosch television universe remains open for any of these characters to pop up in Ballard, but the show runs the risk of being overcrowded. Connelly’s planned final Harry Bosch story should not be a guest spot in Ballard.
