However, before this larger goal can be checked off their list, players must collect black pepper for the King of Portoga. Acquiring black pepper will take players to Baharata, and ultimately the game’s third major dungeon, Kidnapper’s Cave.

Kidnapper’s Cave is the third dungeon in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake‘s main story. On your quest to find black pepper in Baharata, you will learn that bandits have taken a young girl hostage, and the merchant who supplies black pepper promises to give some over once Tanaya is rescued. In this guide, we’ll provide a complete guide to Kidnapper’s Cave, and explain how to get black pepper in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.
Where to Find Kidnapper’s Cave in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Kidnapper’s Cave is located slightly northeast of Baharata, in the small mountain alcove that is clearly visible on the map. To reach the cave, you’ll need to cross the bridge south of Baharata heading east, then make your way north. After crossing, look north along the river, and you’ll see another bridge in the distance. Reaching this bridge is your first goal.
After crossing the bridge, continue west through the trees, and you’ll see the cave entrance appear in the nearby hillside. Enter the cave to begin the dungeon.
Just above the entrance to Kidnapper’s Cave, you’ll find a Secret Spot. Look for the golden brown tree that stands out from the surrounding trees. If you enter at night, you’ll be able to capture one of the two friendly Mushroom Mages.
Kidnapper’s Cave Level B1 Walkthrough – Dragon Quest 3 Remake
When you enter Kidnapper’s Cave, you’ll see that the first basement level is a massive web of small chambers connected by a series of small paths. You can actually get through this section fairly quickly if you wish to complete the dungeon as quickly as possible. This main route will be listed below. Those who wish to explore the cave will be rewarded with several treasure items.
Kidnapper’s Cave B1 Main Path:
The exit leading to B2 is found in the southeastern corner of B1, but you cannot simply head straight down. Instead, after entering the cave, make your way down to the second to last chamber, then head east one chamber. Now you can head south to the final row, and east to the exit. This will lead you to B2. See the red arrow on the map image for a visual example of the main path.
Kidnapper’s Cave Friendly Monster:
There is one Friendly Monster in Kidnapper’s Cave. If you head west from the entrance chamber, you’ll find a Cannibox variant (Lecter for us) in the third chamber you enter. We had a Monster Wrangler in our party, so it is unclear if there were any capture caveats. If they try to escape, try using musk, or return with a Monster Wrangler or Thief.
All Treasure in Kidnapper’s Cave B1:
At this point, you may have a party member who can cast
Peep.
Whenever you approach a chest, make sure to use this spell. If the chest is red, it will contain a Mimic variant. We will include these chests in the list of all treasure due to the fact that they register as such when using
Nose for Treasure
(
Thief Ability
).
There are ten treasure items on B1:
- Treasure 1 – Chest (Enemy): Cannibox
- Treasure 2 – Chest: Care Riviere
- Treasure 3 – Chest: Mini-Medal
- Treasure 4 – Chest (Enemy): Cannibox
- Treasure 5 – Chest: 484 Gold Coins
- Treasure 6 – Buried: Care Ring
- Treasure 7 – Barrel: Seed of Wisdom
- Treasure 8 – Barrel: 337 Gold Coins
- Treasure 9 – Chest: Iron Helmet
- Treasure 10 – Barrel: Magic Water
Kidnapper’s Cave Level B2 Walkthrough – Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Once you reach B2, the map makes the main path pretty clear. There is a main chamber to the south, with a yellow ring around the entrance. This will always mean your quest objective is related to whatever the yellow ring is circling.
Before you head into the final chamber, make your way up to the northwest corner of B2. There you will find a small chamber with 4 treasure chests. Once you’ve collected them all, you can now head back down to the southern chamber.
How to Free Gopal and Tanaya:
Once you open the door to the lower chambers, you’ll immediately be confronted by four Robbin ‘Oodlums. They attack you as a group, so you should use any group-based spells or abilities you have. Crackle is particularly useful here, as they are weak to ice.
Once they are defeated, take the time to heal and use any MP resorting items. In the northwestern corner of the chamber, you’ll find a hanging pouch on the wall with gold inside. Once you are ready, continue south In the final chamber. You’ll find Gopal and Tanaya in two separate jail cells.
Before moving on, interact with the barrel that lines the wall near the eastern cell. Inside you’ll find a Sage’s Elixir, which you can use to replenish 80 MP.
Head to the new location of the yellow ring and you’ll find a mechanism on the wall. Interact with the mechanism to release Gopal and Tanaya.
As you exit, Robbin ‘Ood will appear, stopping the party in their tracks. Speak to the bandit, then prepare to fight him for a second time.
How to Beat Robbin ‘Ood…Again:
Once again, Robbin ‘Ood will be accompanied by three Robbin ‘Oodlums. And like before, the lesser hoods are weak to ice. Robbin ‘Ood is weak to fire. A good strategy here is to use the Hero to start the encounter by focusing on Robbin ‘Ood, while the party focuses on the ‘Oodlums.
Having spellcasters is hugely beneficial, as they will likely have the best chance of having group-based spells that can target all Robbin ‘Oodlums at once. Once they are dealt with, use three members to focus fire attacks on Robbin ‘Ood, while one member takes care of healing and buffs. This will end the encounter pretty fast.
All Treasure on Kidnapper’s Cave Floor B2:
There are six treasure items on floor B2:
- Treasure 1 – Chest: Iron Axe
- Treasure 2 – Chest: Prayer Ring
- Treasure 3 – Chest: Elfin Elixir
- Treasure 4 – Chest: Suit of Full Plate Armor
- Treasure 5 – Pouch: 1,760 Gold Coins
- Treasure 6 – Barrel: Sage’s Elixir

How to Get Black Pepper in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
After freeing Gopal and Tanaya, and returning to Baharata, Gopal will somehow manage to discover that he no longer has any black pepper. If not for the exchange that comes immediately after this revelation, this would be incredibly frustrating. Luckily, Gopal tells you that you simply need to make your way to Alltrades Abbey, which is just north of Kidnapper’s Cave.
If you head north from Kidnapper’s Cave, it’s almost impossible to miss Alltrades Abbey. When you enter the building, you’ll see a merchant with the quest marker over his head. Speak to him and he will give you the black pepper. You will now be able to return to the King of Portoga and trade the black pepper for a ship.
