As Throne and Liberty continues to hold strong on Steam in the wake of its first round of colossal castle siege battles, developers Amazon Games and NCSoft unveil a new game-changing weapon. The Spear is set to be the first new weapon added to the global version of the free MMORPG, and it’s a versatile, mobile option capable of diving in on the enemy backline to disable them, rush to your allies’ side to help turn the tide of combat in your favor, or unleash fiery explosions.
While taking on the best MMORPGs is a tough task against long-standing contenders such as FF14 and World of Warcraft, Throne and Liberty has so far proven a success. It offers PvP battles on a vast scale, with potentially thousands of players taking part in its biggest encounters, and there’s no barrier to entry to starting the free Steam game. As its post-launch roadmap rolls on, the next addition has just been unveiled.
The Spear brings a fresh dynamic to Throne and Liberty. It’s a melee weapon, but one with good reach to it, along with the ability to focus on single targets or unleash sweeping attacks against groups, and it can be slotted into builds for both tank and DPS roles. It’s well equipped to tackle troublesome ranged opponents, with skills such as Flash Barrier that dodges incoming projectiles while dealing damage, Brand Javelin to hurl your spear at distant foes, or Gale Rush to quickly close the distance on enemies or dash to your allies’ aid.
The newcomer also offers lots of ways to disrupt and disable your targets. Cut Wings allows you to build up Weaken stacks on opponents, while dashing to a teammate with Gale Rush unleashes a short-range spin upon arriving that stuns nearby enemies to buy you a moment’s time. These can be amplified with bonuses such as Power Intensification, which increases your attack speed as you weaken foes, or Deadly Decisive Strike, which boosts your critical hit damage against low-health opponents to ensure you score that killer blow.
Among its other tricks is the ability to prevent targets from parrying or to leap in and Fear enemies in an area around your target. There are three skill trees to choose between. Charge lets you opt for mobility and defensive bonuses, Destruction lets you hone in on dealing as much damage as possible, and a PvP-specific tree lets you specialize in your loadout for competitive player combat.
You can also lean into a fire build, stacking up the Ignition effect on your victims to detonate big explosions around them. In co-op play, this can be a fantastic option to help clear out enemy packs quickly, and the spear’s party synergy effect increases your team’s Heavy Attack chance, boosting the frequency that you’ll score those powerful double-damage hits.
The Spear arrives in Throne and Liberty on Thursday December 5. You can learn about the individual skills and passives in more detail courtesy of NCSoft and Amazon Games.
