About a day after the launch of Stalker 2, Ukrainian border authorities reportedly sent out an advisory, urging fans of the series not to make their way to Chernobyl, as it is a dangerous place, and getting too close to the heart of the reactor could result in severe radiation poisoning.

“It was found that a considerable number of adventurer trespassers who illegally tried to enter the restricted area in search of extreme thrills were video game enthusiasts,” said the Ukrainian border authority, according to the South China Morning Post.
While unofficial tours to the exclusion zone have been a thing for years, it seems there’s been an uptick in tourists who think of themselves as would-be Stalkers. The popularity of the game has forced authorities to make this announcement, which will hopefully deter fans from going to check out Chernobyl themselves.

Considering how large the exclusion zone is, it would be easy to wander too close to the site of the reactor meltdown and get affected by radiation poisoning without even realizing it. The border authority has reportedly warned that the Chernobyl exclusion zone “is a restricted area closed to the public and subject to intense radioactive contamination”.
“Illegal entry into and stay in this area is subject to both administrative and criminal liability,” warned the authorities.
Given that GSC Game World is a Ukraine-based developer, and the Stalker series is very popular in the country, it’s not hard to imagine that a lot of local fans would want to see The Zone for themselves. However, this is a foolish endeavor, and anyone unfamiliar with the horrors of radiation poisoning should watch the HBO limited series, Chernobyl, to understand how dangerous it is.
