Key Takeaways
- For a long time, Sonic fans have joked about cheering when Maria gets shot in Sonic 3.
- Now that the movie is actually nearing release, though, that’s changed a bit.
- Sonic fans are now actually warning each other not to cheer when Maria bites the dust, so as to not bother newcomers and general moviegoers.
Sonic fans have been joking about wanting to see Maria get shot in Sonic 3, but they’ve changed their tune recently and are now actively warning each other not to cheer when the inevitable tragedy happens.
Ever since Sonic 2’s post-credits scene showed Shadow the Hedgehog being woken up by GUN, we’ve known that Sonic 3 is going to be an absolute treat for fans of the edgy hedgehog (especially now that he’s got a gun). That’s been made clearer and clearer with each trailer for Sonic 3 that we’ve had, as it looks like the movie will follow Shadow’s origins in Sonic Adventure quite closely.

I Can’t Wait To See A Child Get Murdered In Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Maria is going to get absolutely wasted in the upcoming threequel.
That sadly means that we’re very, very likely to end up seeing Maria get shot by GUN agents aboard the Ark. Sonic fans have known that this moment is bound to happen in Shadow’s introductory movie (unless they censor it somehow), and pretty much all of them have relished the chance to see a literal child get wasted.
Sonic Fans Don’t Actually Want To Cheer When Maria Gets Shot
Even though that might seem really weird to non-Sonic fans, the jokes about Maria are done in good taste and are more about appreciating Sonic 3 for actually following Shadow’s origins seriously. While the fanbase has said for a long time that they’d all be cheering and screaming when Maria gets shot, that tune has changed since the release of the most recent trailer.
Over on Twitter, DiscussingFilm shared a shot (teehee) of Shadow and Maria sitting happily in the grass from the recent trailer, and Sonic fans have taken to retweeting it and begging others to not cheer and scream when the inevitable happens. Twitter user SPD64’s post is perhaps the biggest, with them pointing out that it’s different to do it in front of Sonic fans at the Symphony.
I suspect a lot of these warnings about cinema etiquette have happened due to how screenings of Wicked have been going over the past few weeks.
That’s far from the only hit tweet warning fans not to cheer, as Twitter user RawbertBeef also warned fans against cheering and said, “Y’all… we’re not ACTUALLY cheering when she dies, right? It’s just a bit. Right?”. As much fun as the meme has been over the past year or so, it seems that Sonic fans want to take it seriously for newcomers and not make too much of a scene.
Nothing but respect for my silent Maria scene admirers. It’s going to be tough, but it’s definitely the right thing to do in front of those who have no idea what the meme is even about.
