Tactical FPS Gray Zone Warfare topped the Steam charts with over a million sales when it launched earlier this year and has been holding pretty strong ever since. With many quality-of-life changes and bug fixes out of the way, it’s finally time for the main event: Gray Zone Warfare Night Ops, the game’s biggest update yet, which introduces a day and night cycle, enemy AI overhauls, and much more.
Available now, the Gray Zone Warfare Night Ops update is the first major overhaul for the tactical FPS game since launch, taking onboard feedback from recent playtests to dramatically shake up the experience. This is also only the first step in developer Madfinger Games’ ambitious three-year Gray Zone Warfare roadmap, with further additions coming thick and fast next year.
As the name alludes to, the big selling point of the Night Ops update is the new day/night cycle, seamlessly transforming the map while you’re out looting. Naturally, with its focus on realism, you’ll need to prepare appropriately and bring night-vision gear and tracer bullets to fight back when it gets dark. Remember though that you can still lose your NVGs, making night exploration even riskier.
If you’re a particular fan of night-time skirmishes, you’ll be glad to hear there’s also a new operation type that specifically takes place at night as one of the update’s 22 new tasks.
While the addition of a day/night cycle is the most exciting new feature, Night Ops also overhauls one of Gray Zone Warfare’s long-standing weak points – poor AI. Say goodbye to aim-botting bots as AI reaction times have been adjusted for a more balanced experience. Beyond that, the AI now adapts to the day/night cycle with flashlights and environmental lighting while also moving with greater tactical prowess. In fact, they can now patrol, take cover, and crouch to outplay you.
Alongside these major overhauls is a suite of other great changes, such as an increased coma duration and improved armor for your upper torso and neck.
To celebrate the release of the Night Ops update, Gray Zone Warfare is available at a 20% discount from November 27 until December 4, costing $27.99 on Steam. That makes it the lowest price yet, so don’t miss out if you’re interested.
Gray Zone Warfare is already on its way to becoming one of the best multiplayer games for fans of tactical shooters, with no signs of slowing down in 2025. With its unique take on the extraction genre, mixing in a more persistent open world, it’s well worth checking out.
